BME Club Information

Member since fall 2005, Member of BMES since spring 2008

Why are you running for this position?

BMES is a valuable organization that should continue as a support and networking resource for BME students, especially undergraduates entering college for the first time. I have been involved in the club since freshman year, and I have a pretty good idea of how the club can be useful to students. I would like to build on the foundation that has been set and encourage continued involvement by all.

If elected, what goals would you strive to achieve to better the club? How would you accomplish these goals?

  • Continue strong community involvement/volunteerism when possible (though this does depend on member participation)
  • Provide more opportunities to hear from local faculty, members of the community who may use biomedical tools in their jobs – these opportunities should add to everyone’s educational experience by keeping freshman and sophomores aware of what is possible as they become juniors and seniors and by giving juniors and seniors the opportunity to see what they’ve learned in practice and possible places to apply those skills as a professional.
  • Push for involvement with nationwide BMES (first thing: BMES conference Thurs 2-Saturday 4 October 2008 in St. Louis. Is there any funding? We could drive, so that would cut down on costs…)
  • Work closely with other officers to implement ideas, as well as supporting members in their vision for the chapter. This can occur through regular officer meetings, availability through email, and discussion with faculty about their perceptions of what students need (for example, academic support in one particular area).

Why do you think you are the best candidate for this position?

  • Strong leadership skills
  • Connections in community
  • Experience as freshman-junior (will be senior) in BME
  • Current and continuing involvement in volunteering, so I can encourage others to do the same.
  • Experience working in research/taking advantage of programs – able to encourage others to use their resources, help them find resources.
