The first annual African Masquerade Ball went
off without a hitch thanks to a co-sponsorship with

Jena 6 Rally for Social Justice
On September 20th, 2007 Black Student Union and students and activists around the world gathered to protest the unfair and injust treatment and persecution of the "Jena 6" but IUPUI's Black Student Union also drew light upon Megan Williams, Genarlow Wilson, the Angola 3, Sean Bell and other issues of concern to the Black Community. On this date we took a collective vow of vigilance against social injustice, it is our beckoning call to action on any and every case we can make a difference on.
Same Race Different Cultures
The first of many discussions between BSU and ASA was a great one thanks to the involvement of students from Africa, the Caribbean and Faculty and Staff from IUPUI. We tackled many issues and found a lot of common ground. Thank you to everyone who came outCircle City Classic Parade
Every October the Circle City Classic Parade comes to town, and the red and black clad members of BSU marched alongside the likes of dignitaries, fraternities and sororities and inflatable baloons to the delight of all the children at the parade.
Unity Social/Black & Brown Get Down
BSU resurrected a long forgotten tradition with the combined efforts of Latino Student Association to bring a much needed celebration of Unity between the black and brown community. A great time was had by all, so much so that the event Black & Brown Get Down was re-tooled to emulate that same energy!
Campus Involvement
It has been a banner year for Black Student Union and this years Campus Involvement has been no exception. The members of BSU showed up and showed out at every event campus wide and got us to our highest number of members in the last 11 years.
BSU Soul Roll
This marks the first year and a successful outing for BSU's Soul Roll planned by our own Will Watson. We hope to make this an annual event and appreciate everyone who came out to support.
Community Service
It has been Black Student Union's ongoing dedication to Community Service and helping those in need that have defined strength of character that exists yet is often talked about within the young black community. For more info, click here...
MLK Dinner
Every year in January, Black Student Union in partnership with IUPUI Student Government produces a banquet to honor outstanding individuals and their accomplishmentss in rememberance of Martin Luther King Jr. Click here for more info...
Soul Cinema
Every year during our entertainment week of Black History Month, we choose a film from black cinematic history to entertain with an older film our students may not have seen, this year we watched "School Daze", a Spike Lee Joint. Thanks to all who came out to make this another great event!
Bar-B-Q With BSU
As a new end of the year tradition, to celebrate the end of finals and a productive school year; the members of Black Student Union, family and friends gather for a Bar-B-Q and a good old fashioned game of Kickball.

This year, in what will undoubtedly become an ongoing tradition, Black Student Union teamed up with Sigma Gamma Rho, Sorority Inc. to put together a night of love and laughs. Thanks to everyone who came out and had a good time with the Red & Black and Royal Blue & Gold!!!!
Shihan the Poet
This year, in our ongoing efforts to support co-sponsorships with other organizations on campus, in conjunction with Student Activities Programming Board (SAPB), Shihan of Def Poetry Jam fame graced our campus with his own special brand of conscious poetry proceeded by open mic featuring the best talent IUPUI had to offer.
Images in Black
In our second year of recognizing events and images in news & media which pertain or affect the African American Community, we were blessed to have the likes of Professor Kim White-Mills, Mic P from 96.3 WHHH and noted activist and civil rights leader Jeff Johnson on our panel to enlighten, entertain and educate us about the truth & lies behind the images in black.
IUPUI BSU Wild N' Out Tournament
In the first of what will become an annual event, IUPUI Black Student Union took on BSU's from Butler and Indiana University as well as the Black Student Association from University of Indianapolis in an eventual victory for IUPUI proving that in March 2007, we were the champions of freestyle comedy.
Fight AIDS
Black Student Union hosts an annual AIDS Awareness Week, and in keeping with that theme, BSU has pledged to offer free AIDS testing with the help of Brother's United and Bridging the Gap. We provided information packages, participate in the Indiana AIDS Walk and hold a candle-lit vigil every year for the families of and those individuals living with HIV and AIDS. Help BSU Fight AIDS, get tested and know your status.
MAAFA: A Healing Journey
In what we hope will become the first of many cultural trips, Blsck Student Union took a trip to New York to see the MAAFA suite, as well as to experience local museums, Harlem, New York and the overall sense of unity and community within the burroughs of New York while bulding a sense of unity amongst ourselves.
BSU Awards 2007
In yet another first, BSU decided to end the year in grand fashion for it's members. By hosting a Grammy/MTV Awards-esque member appreciation gala, the biggest and brightest stars were awarded a "people's choice" of sorts in a variety of categories similar to that of a yearbook. Next year we hope to expand beyond our existing categories much as our membership has expanded this year.

Black Student Union Scholarship Pageant
We make history every day, we don't need a month. In grand fashion, with the help and support of Omega Psi Phi's, Zeta Phi graduate chapter, Black Student Union set the bar high as we put together the first scholarship pageant in IUPUI history. Congrats to our innaugural winner, Travasha Winfrey.Back to School Rally:
On August 4th, 2007 with an opportunity given to us by MCOY and ENCASA during their Youth Against Violence, Back to School Rally; Black Student Union once again took the initiative as the only college student organization volunteering at Monument Circle giving school supplies such as crayons, paper, notebooks, folders, pencils and pens to the youth who came by our table, each eager to learn more about IUPUI BSU. Hopefully this will become a ongoing tradition.
