What is the Visual Preference Procedure?
Visual Preference Procedure (VPP)
Version One
In one version of the VPP, infants are presented with two pairings of the same woman's face saying two different words, and just one auditory word that matches one of the faces. The infants are videotaped and the length of time they look at each object is coded. If infants look longer at the visual face that's mouthing the word that matches the word they hear, we assume that infants can match up the auditory and visual word information.
Version Two
In another version of the VPP, infants see a checkerboard pattern on the TV screen and hear one sound at a time (for example, someone talking). The infants are videotaped and the length of time they look at the checkerboard pattern during each different sound presentation is coded. If infants look longer at the checkerboard pattern while listening to babytalk than while listening to adult speech, we assume that they prefer to listen to babytalk!
