SERGEANT FIRST CLASS DOUGLAS A. SMITH

U.S. ARMY

 

                Sergeant First Class Douglas Smith, native of Indianapolis, Indiana, volunteered for Army service in July of 1996. Upon completion of one-station-unit training at Fort McClellan Alabama, he was awarded the military occupational specialty of 31B, Military Police. 

From November 1996 to May 1998, Sergeant First Class Smith was assigned to A Company, Military Police Activity, Fort Rucker, Alabama as a patrol officer and Special Reaction Team, entry team member. His training while stationed at Fort Rucker included Basic Telecommunication Operator Course (911), Basic Law Enforcement Bicycle Course and Advanced Law Enforcement Bicycle Course.

                From May 1998 to May 1999, Sergeant First Class Smith was assigned to 1st Platoon, 55th Military Police Company, Camp Red Cloud, Korea as a patrolman and Team Leader. His training while assigned there was live fire gunnery training on multiple weapon platforms.

                From May 1999 to September 2001, Sergeant First Class Smith was assigned to 2nd Platoon, 64th Military Police Company, Fort Hood, Texas as a patrolman and Team Leader. His training while assigned to Fort Hood included Advanced Accident Investigation Course, Primary Leadership Development Course, Field Hygiene/Sanitation Course and Army Recruiter Course.  Sergeant First Class Smith also deployed to Hungary in support of Operation Joint Forge (SFOR 7) from March 2000 to September 2000.  His unit was responsible for Convoy Security, Main Supply Route Security, Area Reconnaissance, and Law and Order Operations.

                From September 2001 to December 2004, Sergeant First Class Smith was assigned to the Milwaukee Recruiting Battalion and stationed in Greenfield, Wisconsin on recruiting duty. He was initially assigned as a detail recruiter responsible for 6 high schools.  He was also assigned as the station commander for over a year for his use of recruiting systems and knowledge of the area. His training while assigned at Greenfield Recruiting Station was Military Police Basic Non-Commissioned Officer Course.

                From December 2004 to July 2008, Sergeant First Class Smith was assigned to A Company, 1st Battalion, 11th Infantry Regiment, Fort Benning, Georgia as a Squad Leader and Platoon Sergeant for the Basic Officer Leadership Course II. Sergeant First Class Smith was the primary instructor for the Modern Army Combatives Program, Basic Rifle Marksmanship, Land Navigation, and small unit tactics.  His training while at Fort Benning, Georgia includes Combatives Level 1-4 Courses, Unit Prevention Leader Course, Basic Instructor Training Course, Air Assault Course, Combat Life Saver Course, and Advanced Non-Commissioned Officer Course.

 

                From July 2008 to October 2010, Sergeant First Class Smith was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, Fort Polk, Louisiana as an Operations Non-Commissioned Officer.  Sergeant First Class Smith deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom 08-09 from July 2008 to September 2009.  He was assigned as the Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge of the Base Defense Operations Center.

From October 2010 to October 2011, Sergeant First Class Smith was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 25th Transportation Battalion, Camp Henry, Korea as a Maneuver and Mobility Support Non-Commissioned Officer.  Sergeant First Class Smith was also utilized as the Base Defense Operation Center Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge for all of Area IV.  His training while in Korea included Anti-Terrorism Officer Basic Course, Operation Security Program Manager Course, and Security Officer Training Course.

From October 2011 to June 2013, Sergeant First Class Smith was assigned to 3rd Platoon, 401st Military Police Company, Fort Hood, Texas as a Platoon Sergeant.  His unit was responsible for Defense CBRN Reaction Force for all of North America.  His training while at Fort Hood, Texas included the United States Army Civilian Police Academy, Environmental Compliance Officer Certification and Master Driver Course.

Sergeant First Class Douglas Smith is currently serving as a Military Science II Instructor at Indiana University/Purdue University at Indianapolis.  He has a daughter Katelynn Leann Smith that is 13 years old.

                His Military schools include: Senior Leaders Course, Advanced Leaders Course, Warrior Leaders Course, Army Recruiter School, US Army Civilian Police Academy, Air Assault School, Combatives Level I-4 Courses, Master Driver Course, Environmental Compliance Officer Course, OPSEC Program Managers Course, Anti-Terrorism/Force Protection II Course, Basic Instructor Training Course, Unit Prevention Leader Course, Field Hygiene/Sanitation Course and Combat Life Saver Course.

                His awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with six oak leaf clusters, Army Achievement Medal with six oak leaf clusters, Meritorious Unit Commendation Award, Army Good Conduct Medal with five knots, National Defense Service Ribbon, Korean Defense Service Ribbon, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, and two NATO Medals (Former Yugoslavia and ISAF). He has also earned the Air Assault Badge, Gold Recruiting Badge with three sapphires, and a Drivers Badge.
