Course Requirements
NOTE: It is your responsibility to keep track of your grades and monitor your progress throughout the semester.
Grading Scale
EXAMS (30% of Grade): There are TWO (2) exams in this course. You will be tested on ALL information covered in the readings, in class discussions and films, regardless of whether we have a chance to discuss them in class. Scheduled exams are clearly marked in the syllabus. The exams will consist of multiple choice and/or short answer questions. It is your responsibility to arrive on time and complete each exam. Late arrival to any exam does not mean that additional time will be afforded to complete the exam. Makeup exams are not given, except in cases of serious illness or sudden emergency. In such cases, the incident must be fully substantiated and documented in writing. You are fully responsible to obtain this excuse from a physician and/or other medical personnel and submit it to me within 48 hours of an exam. If a makeup must be administered, it will be an essay-only exam and will take place in my office at 9 a.m., the first Friday following the scheduled exam. No other accommodations will be made. CULTURAL ACTIVITIES (10% of Grade): As a means of linking what you are learning in this course to life outside of the classroom, you are required to conduct TWO (2) "cultural activities" of your own choosing. This assignment requires you to attend local events of cultural relevance. The Cultural Activity paper should consist of a 1-2 paged, typed and double-spaced "response paper" wherein you are describing the event or activity in detail, discussing your participation in the event, and relating what you've experienced back to anthropology somehow. Grading will be based on essay composition, coherency, grammatical fluency and the documentation required to accompany the paper (e.g., ticket, brochure, etc. ) . These assignments will be collected twice during the semester, as marked in the syllabus. However, it is suggested that you pass them in as you complete them. A listing of valid events, divided into "primary" and "secondary" options, is provided here. PORTFOLIO PROJECT (40% of Grade): ATTENDANCE & PARTICIPATION (20% of Grade): |
