Indiana State Medical Association Medical Student Section General Business Meeting Minutes September 14, 2003

  1. Meeting called to order at 5:40 pm
  2. Members in attendance: Carrie Gick, Sonali Sakaria, Meeta Shah, Kellie Park, Ben Tourkow, Ben Newman, Jennifer Edwards, Neel Jain, Shari Nemeth, Bill Walsh, John Allen, Ann Walling, Matt Lynx, Mandy Huggins, Ryan Wetzel, Ann- Marie Lawlor, Laura Meyer, Lee Ann Ruff, Kevin Masur, Brad Bohnstedt, Timo Dygert

  4. Approval of Minutes: Motion by Carrie Gick, request Kellie Park to postpone approval until they are placed on the listserv.
  5. Officer Reports:
    1. Chair (Carrie Gick)-
      1. Need extra help distributing Stedman's. Ann Walling will help
      2. Health fair will be in upcoming newsletter. Please take a look.
      3. Thanks for all efforts in recruitment. The talk with Dr. Knote went very well with approximately 30 people attending the lunch lecture. Thanks to Neel Jain.
      4. The attendance policy was accepted for the year
    2. Membership VP (Sonali Sakari)
      1. We have approximately 50 new applicants from recruitment and 50 more in the mail!
      2. Matt Lynx needs to turn in applications.
      3. Need newly elected center rep info as soon as possible.
      4. Noelia Zork of the South Bend campus is the winner of the PDA.
    3. Treasurer (Meeta Shah)
      1. requested any reimbursements
      2. MSC will be funding portions of lunches and other events, so we can fund people to attend the interim meeting in Hawaii.
    4. Secretary (Kellie Park)-
      1. THANKS to everyone who helped in any capacity for the fair. It was a great success and we hope to continue next year as a regularly sponsored AMA event.
      2. Dr. Dana-Lynn Hiller of Forest Manor Health Clinic Volunteered to write letters to anyone who participated in the fair
      3. Please see me if you have thank you letters to give to people for the fair
    5. Community Action (Ben Tourkow)-
      1. Middle school "DocDays" will likely be in October due to ISTEP testing
    6. Student Trustee (Ben Newman, Alt. Trustee Jennifer Edwards)-
      1. There will be another Board Meeting, but date was not given.
    7. Officer at Large (Neel Jain)-
    8. Regional Delegate (Shari Nemeth)-
      1. We will work on a lunch with Dr. Maynard, ISMA president
    9. Campus Representatives
      1. Indianapolis
        -Kellie Park - -Ann Walling - Wed. Sept 17, 2003 will be voting for Indy Campus first year rep
      2. Northwest
      3. South Bend
        -Matt Lynx - Website is up! Please take a look!
        Congratulations Matt for earning a spot on the National AMA Committee for computers and technology
      4. Fort Wayne
        -Mandy Huggins - Will continue to hold Medical Spanish luncheon
        50% first years signed up for AMA and all of second years-Good job Mandy
      5. Lafayette
        -Laura Meyer - still working on recruitment
      6. Bloomington
        -Jenn Edwards - recruitment is low for first years, but Jenn will keep working
      7. Evansville
        -Lee Ann Ruff - Tuesday will hold lunch for AMA
      8. Muncie
  6. Committee Reports
    1. Commission on Scientific Research-Shari Nemeth
      1. Bioterrorism and ATLS: will have basic workshop in Hawaii
      2. Efforts to translate bench research into clinical practice from Committee on Medical Education
      3. Upcoming service projects may include an obesity workshop to parallel tobacco cessation projects
    2. Commission on Physician Assistance-Jason Ulm
      1. Most recent meeting focused on school and local youth sports
      2. Blue book is issued by ISMA for PE guidelines and physical fitness standards for age levels of school children
      3. Still encouraging mouthpieces for more sports than football
    3. Committee on Family Violence-Tara Dubuay
      1. The Committee has planned its first meeting
    4. Committee on Medical Education- Bill Walsh
      1. The Committee is currently looking at legal aspects of OSCE and ways to reduce student debt
  7. Old Business
    1. Forest Manor Health fair wrap-up, see Secretary report above
    2. Region V meeting March 26-27
      1. suggested topics are "what it takes to be an intern" focusing on medical malpractice and identifying patients that are being abused
      2. please join the Region V yahoo group; contact Meeta at meshah@iupui.edu if you have not done so
  8. New Business
    1. ISMA-HOD is Sept 19-21. Please be aware of the schedule for registration and credentialing. Voting delegates have been selected and should attend. Please send comments on resolutions to Carrie, cgick@iupui.edu
    2. Regional delegate is needed so please see website for application. Applicants will need a letter from the Dean of the Medical School to ensure candidacy and good academic standing. Jenn Edwards volunteered
    3. Interim meeting-Dec 4-6 will be interim meeting in Hawaii. Need to know if interested. Please contact Meeta Shah if you are interested in attending. Please be aware of the October 3 deadline for committees. There will be a 5K fun run in Hawaii with a $20 fee that goes to charity for MSS and the Alliance (projects smoke-free workplace and healthy families).
    4. Meeta is now a regional delegate! Regional meeting was set in Ohio at end of May/beginning April. There is a need for Alternate Delegate. Please contact Meeta if you are interested.
  9. Next Meeting is scheduled for Sun Oct. 12, NO EXEC, general meeting starts at 5:30pm.
