Enjoy your winter break!

Hoping everyone has a relaxing break! We have a few fun events coming up over the break.

Planned events include:

December 22nd

Comedy Sportz – @7:30 PM (Plan to show up a few minutes early)

Comedy Sportz is improvisational comedy played as a sport – two teams compete for laughs with a referee calling the shots. The audience makes suggestions and votes for the winners. If you remember and enjoyed the television show Whose Line is it Anyway, you will love Comedy Sportz! It is family friendly comedy, so feel free to bring little ones! (Don’t worry, there is plenty of grown-up fun on beautiful Mass Ave available after the show). Please RSVP to aliss1@iupui.edu by  December 14th if you plan on attending. ALISS will pay for tickets for those who RSVP by the 14th. Comedy Sportz is located at 721 Massachusetts Avenue.

Shows quite often sell out, so please RSVP!

December 27th

Librarian Karaoke at the Living Room Lounge! – @8:00 PM

934 North Pennsylvania Street, Indianapolis, IN 46204

Need to sing the blues about the past semester? Belt your heart out with your friends and colleagues at one of Indianapolis’ favorite places for karaoke. Not a performer? No worries – every rock star at heart needs an audience. There are also pool tables and darts available for the more “athletic” minded future providers of information services. Or just relax, unwind, and share a beverage with fellow students.

***Please Note: The Living Room Lounge is a 21 and over bar that allows smoking. ALISS cannot pay for this activity -  However, if you let us know you are coming at aliss1@iupui.edu we will know how many tables to push together!

January 6th

First Friday @7:00 PM

Check out new art by local artists, feast on wine and cheese, and dance the night away at the first IDADA First Friday event of 2012! The first Friday of every month, downtown galleries and artists’ studios open to the public for a free, self-guided tour of the local Indianapolis art scene. Meet up with your fellow students at the Kurt Vonnegut Memorial Library at 7 pm to start the evening off right by viewing new works by Indiana artist Jason Turner. From there we will decide as a group where to go – If you are new to Indianapolis, this is the best introduction to the local arts scene, and if you are an old hand at First Fridays, come to meet new people and lend us your expertise!

January 20th

ALISS Book Group @7:00 PM

Use some of your spare time over break to read Michael Chabon’s The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay. From IMCPL:

Chabon’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel follows Joe Kavalier, an artist skilled in the art of escape, Houdini-style – a talent that gets him safely out of Nazi-ridden Prague in 1939. Kavalier makes it to New York City, where he teams up with his cousin Sammy Clay, a writer who is looking for a partner to design the art for a new comic book. The duo find themselves sitting on a gold mine when they create a host of superheroes – the mighty Escapist, the powerful, nocturnal Luna Moth – who fight Hitler and his evil forces. But off the page, the complexities of the real world beckon, as Kavalier struggles to raise money to bring his family to America, and he and Clay both come under the sway of Rosa Saks, a seductive muse who changes their lives forever.

Meet at 7 pm on Friday, January 20th at Cornerstone Coffee House in Broad Ripple (5380 N. College Avenue)  to enjoy a beverage and chat about the book with other readers. Any questions? Please email Jared Harmon at jarharmo@umail.iu.edu.
