“In the Woods” September Book Club

We will be having our first book club of this fall semester at 7:30 pm at Fountain Square Brewery on September 25th, 2013. There will be free parking at the brewery, which is all the more reason for you to stop by! :)

Our choice this month is….. “In the Woods” by Tana French, a mystery novel about the nearby woods on the outskirts of Dublin and children who disappear within it.

Scholarship Opportunity!

Hello SLIS students!

As many of you likely know, the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) conference is coming to Indianapolis this spring!  The conference will run April 10th-13th 2013.  The theme for this year is ACRL 2013: Imagine, Innovate, Inspire.  You can read more about the conference on the website: http://conference.acrl.org/

ALISS, the Association for Library and Information Science Students, will be offering scholarships to help cover the cost of attendance for five students.  The scholarships will be for $100 each, to be used to fund the cost of the early-bird registration fee for full-time library science students.

Students interested in applying must be full-time students in the School of Library and Information Science.  Applicants must submit a letter of interest essay of not more than 500 words describing the potential benefits of attending ACRL 2013.

Essays are due by Friday January 4th 2013

Winners will be notified by Friday January 11th 2013.

IFLA Scholarship Opportunity

Check out this wonderful opportunity from The Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR):

CLIR is pleased to announce a scholarship for a student of library and information science to attend the World Library and Information Congress of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA).  The 2013 IFLA annual meeting takes place in Singapore, August 17-23.  The scholarship will cover conference registration, passport fee (if applicable), international economy-class air travel, ground transportation, meals, and lodging.

The scholarship is made possible through the generosity of Mathilde and Howard Rovelstad.

Students in S506 will present their research proposals developed over the semester.
 
This is an informal event which allows individual interactions between the poster presenter and attendees which encourages the development of social networks and the exchange of ideas on topics of importance to the profession.

Weaver (Teen Services Librarian at Frankfort Community Public Library) will talk about  adventures in public library job searching, some practical job hunting information you might not learn in class, and answer your questions.  Lunch will be provided after the event!

Landing the Job!: Academic Library Version

SLIS Bloomington graduates Willie Miller (Assistant Librarian at IUPUI University Library) and Eric Snajdr (Assistant Librarian at IUPUI University Library) are going to discuss the academic library job interview process and strategies for success.  They will offer tips on landing an interview, as well as how to prepare for an interview and what to expect throughout the process.  Breakfast will be provided before the event!

Dr. Preer’s Lecture and Retirement Event

As we mentioned before, Dr. Preer is retiring and we’ve got some details on the upcoming event!

Join IU Indy alums, faculty and students for a special evening celebrating the retirement of Professor Jean Preer and her contributions to IU SLIS-Indy and the library profession on Friday, June 8, 2012.  Festivities will begin with a reception at 6:30 in the Lilly Auditorium Lobby, followed by a lecture from Dr. Preer titled “Perspectives in Librarianship” and wrapped up with dessert and coffee in the DEWEY Den.
