The Indiana University School of Physical Education and Tourism Management is seeking applications and nominations for the position of Dean. Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), the third largest campus in Indiana, is located in the heart of a metropolitan area of 1.7 million people. Over 29,000 students are served by the largest number of degree programs available in the state. IUPUI is composed of 18 schools including among others Physical Education and Tourism Management, Liberal Arts, Science, Journalism, Education, Social Work, Allied Health, Business, Engineering & Technology, Public Affairs, Law, Medicine, Dentistry, and Nursing. Although less than thirty years old, IUPUI has experienced rapid growth and development and represents a dynamic campus where change and improvement are vital parts of everyday life. The campus is well on its way to becoming a model for urban higher education for the twenty-first century, committed to serving the needs of both non-traditional and traditional students. The Dean is the chief academic and administrative officer of the School of Physical Education and Tourism Management responsible for the overall academic mission of the School including teaching, research, and service. The School has two academic departments - (a) Physical Education and (b) Tourism, Conventions and Event Management. The Dean also assumes oversight for the Department of Military Science and the Department of Intramural and Recreational Sports. Intramural and Recreational Sports is a service unit charged with providing recreational opportunities for faculty, staff and students at IUPUI. Finally, the Dean has administrative responsibilities for Camp Brosius in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, where the camp serves as both a seasonal academic home and as the Indiana University Alumni Family Camp. Specific duties of the Dean include: Develop, monitor, and revise a long-range academic plan for the unit; guide the process for the hiring, retention, promotion, and tenure of faculty; develop the annual budget for the School and see that sound fiscal policies under Responsibility Center Management are applied to the budget process; extend the mission of the School to the community, profession, and to alumni of the School; promote the development of quality classroom teaching; increase the participation of a diverse population in the student body, faculty, staff, and external programs; foster and facilitate a quality work environment for faculty and staff; develop, cultivate, and maintain positive relationships with donor prospects, solicit gifts on the school's behalf, and steward those gifts according to donor intent; encourage and promote faculty research and creative activity; approve the curriculum of all academic programs (both graduate and undergraduate); represent the School of Physical Education and Tourism Management to campus administration; foster cordial and collaborative relationships with internal and external constituencies; and work with Campus Facility Services on the management, maintenance, repair, and rehabilitation of existing facilities and make recommendations to Central Administration for new facilities. Qualifications of the Dean: Candidates must have the academic qualifications and achievements sufficient to merit an appointment as a tenured, full professor in the School. Administrative experience also is required. Other qualifications include: documented leadership ability; nationally recognized record in scholarship; strong interpersonal skills, demonstrated support and motivation of faculty, students and staff; demonstrated ability to foster high quality teaching and research; commitment to maintaining and promoting institutional change; experience with international programs; demonstrated commitment and/or experience in, community engagement; demonstrated commitment to, and/or record of, procurement of external funding; demonstrated commitment to, and promotion of, increased diversity among faculty, staff and students.
