About the Teach Science Noyce Scholarship
The Schools of Science, School of Education, and the Urban Center for the Advancement of STEM Education (UCASE) at IUPUI received a $750,000 Robert Noyce Scholarship Grant from the National Science Foundation to offer generous scholarship awards up to $25,000 each that pay for the last two years of the secondary science teacher education program.
The Robert Noyce Scholarship Teach Science Program encourages talented STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) majors and professionals to enter the challenging and rewarding profession of middle/high school science teaching in high need schools. Recipients of the Teach Science Noyce Scholarship at IUPUI are eligible to receive both monetary and professional support to complete their teaching certification and baccalaureate degree in Biology, Chemistry, Geology, or Physics simultaneously.
Eligibility
A Noyce Scholar is a student in the School of Science who:
- Is enrolled as a full-time student in the IUPUI School of Science, with an overall GPA of at least 2.9 of 4.0 and has successfully completed at least 60 credit hours that are required by the Biology Chemistry, Geology, or Physics Teaching degree programs
- Has successfully applied for admission to the School of Educaiton-Secondary Education Learning to Teach/Teaching to Learn (LTTL) Program. More information about LTTL can be found at http://education.iupui.edu/soe/programs/undergraduate/index.aspx.
- Is a citizen or permanent resident of the U.S. Applicants from underrepresented minority groups are encouraged to apply.
- Has passing scores on all parts of PRAXIS I.
- Agrees to teach for two years in an urban or high-need school for every year of scholarship accepted. (Scholarship amounts will be repaid as a loan if the scholar fails to meet the service obligation.)
Important: In the state of Indiana, virtually all public schools qualify as "high need" and Noyce Scholars may teach at a high need school in any state of the U.S.
Benefits of becoming a Noyce Scholar at IUPUI
- $12,500 scholarship awarded per calendar year for two years. Each year you receive three scholarship disbursements: $5,100 each in the Fall and Spring, and $2,300 in the Summer.
- Free PRAXIS I and II exam review sessions.
- During your two years as a Noyce Scholar, you will complete and earn a BA or BS degree from either Purdue University in Biology, Chemistry, or Physics, or a BA degree in Geology from Indiana University.
- Certification as a secondary education Science teacher.
- Opportunity to teach science to adolescents in an urban or high need school, two years of teaching for each year of scholarship received.
How to Apply
- Complete and submit the IUPUI Continuing Student Scholarships Application by the due dates. IUPUI Scholarship application can be downloaded from: http://www.iupui.edu/~scentral/continuing/majorspecific.html.
- Submit two letters of recommendation: one from a Science professor and the other from an Education professor or an academic advisor.
- Write an essay responding to the question: What experience(s) has motivated you to pursue a career teaching science in a high-need school?
Application Deadlines
- March 15 for scholarships beginning the following FALL semester. Student must also make an application to the Secondary Teacher Education Program by February 7.
- October 15 for scholarships beginning the following SPRING semester. Student must also make application to the Secondar Teacher Education Program by September 7.
How to Renew a Noyce Scholarship
Teach Science Noyce Scholarships can be awarded for the second year if the recipient continues in good standing with the schools of Science and Education and makes satisfactory progress in the program leading to obtaining a teacher certification for the secondary science education. Noyce Scholarship recipients must file a request for a renewal of the scholarship by April 1.
