Dr. Philip Sadler, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics Science Education

Dr. Philip Sadler, the F.W. Wright Senior Lecturer in Astronomy, teaches Celestial Navigation, Harvard's oldest undergraduate course in science. He directs one of the largest research groups in science education in the U.S., housed at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. Dr. Sadler's research interests include: assessment of students' scientific misconceptions and how they change as a result of instruction, the development of computer technologies that allow youngsters to engage in research, and models for enhancement of the skills of experienced teachers. Dr. Sadler was the executive producer of A Private Universe, an award-winning video on student conceptions in science. His talk will focus on the research techniques used to collect the information in the videos and the implications of these data for teaching and learning in science.
