The Urban Center for STEM Education (UCASE) in the School of Education at IUPUI has received $352,437 from the National Science Foundation (DUE-1002638) to host the Midwest Noyce Regional Conference in 2010 and 2011 at the University Place Conference Center and Hotel on the IUPUI campus. This award is a result of institutional collaboration between IUPUI and Purdue University led by Dr. Kim S. Nguyen and three Co-Principal Investigators: Drs. Signe Kastberg, Kathleen Marrs of IUPUI and John Staver of Purdue University, West Lafayette.

While the 2010 Midwest Noyce Regional Conference, scheduled for April 8 and 9, places a strong focus on preparation of excellent STEM teachers for urban and rural high need schools, the 2011 Conference will highlight aspects of effective math and science teaching in the nation's high need classrooms. Conference participants are Noyce Scholarship recipients and principal investigators of 49 Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship projects in 15 states of the Midwest. Conference attendance is by invitation only and 150 attendees are expected.

Six distinguished speakers will give theme focused presentations at the general sessions of the 2010 Midwest Noyce Regional Conference. They are Penny Noyce (Noyce Foundation), Julie Luft (Arizona State University), David Stinson (Georgia State University), Gail Shroyer (Kansas State University, Rick Crosslin (Indianapolis Children's Museum), and Susanne Eckes (Indiana University). Dr. Deborah E. Allen from the National Science Foundation will give the conference opening remarks. The conference will take place over two days, April 8 and 9 with an agenda to outline strategies and best practices for supporting Noyce Scholarship recipients in the Midwest to be effective teachers in the high-need urban or rural schools. The other goal of the 2010 conference is to continue to build community among the Noyce Scholarship project PIs and their Noyce Scholars in the Midwestern states.
