IUPUI and Super Bowl XLVI

The clock is ticking down toward one of the biggest sports events in Indianapolis's history, with thousands of visitors coming to town and millions more who will make a "virtual visit" via international TV broadcasts—and IUPUI is in the heart of it all.

Nearly 300 alumni, students, faculty and staff are part of the event, from working for the city's Super Bowl committee to volunteering in the Super Bowl Village, from staffing high-profile events such as the "Taste of the NFL" to manning booths in the NFL Experience to supervising exciting new facilities such as the Near Eastside Legacy Center—events and facilities that will enhance the quality of life in IUPUI's home town far beyond the Feb. 5 showdown between the New York Giants and the New England Patriots in Lucas Oil Stadium.

THE VISUAL SIDE OF SUPER BOWL XLVI

A number of Herron School of Art and Design graduates and future instructors have made their mark during the 46 for XLVI Super Bowl murals project, part of Indianapolis's preparation for the Super Bowl.

The Herron-connected artists contributing to the beautification of downtown Indianapolis include:

  • Pamela Bliss (faculty)
  • FAB Crew
  • Michael Jordan
  • William Denton Ray
  • Amy Rheinhardt
  • Barbara Zech

In addition, two other artists have ties to either IUPUI or IU Bloomington: Clayton Hamilton, an Education grad from IUPUI, and Barbara Stahl, a fine arts graduate from IUB, created murals.

Former Herron student William Ray's creation celebrates the spirit of community service. Loves You ... You Love is located at Olive and Pleasant Run Parkway. The artist is featured with his Super Bowl mural. Herron School of Art and Design graduate Barbara Zech created her unique look at the Vermont Street plaza on the Downtown Canal.

Capitol Ave. Bliss painted Indianapolis writer Kurt Vonnegut on the side of the Massala Building at 345 Massachusetts Avenue.
The Fantastic Aerosol Brothers are Herron grads and long-time graffiti muralists, who created two Super Bowl murals, including "Wormin'" on the Olive Street retaining wall. The FAB Crew have worked together for years as muralists using a graffiti motif that relies on strong, vibrant colors and characters. "Wormin'" is located near Pleasant Run Creek. Herron grad Amy Rheinhardt created 'Swept Away' as one of her three murals for the 'Swept Away' is located on a building wall at 801 Broad Ripple Avenue. Rheinhardt, who also created two other murals for the Super Bowl project, is a Arts Council of Indianapolis Creative Renewal Arts Fellow.

SUPER SERVICE EFFORT FEATURES IUPUI FACULTY

Thousands of guests will descend upon Indianapolis for Super Bowl XLVI, and the city's preparation to welcome those visitors was aided significantly by IUPUI connections.

Amanda Cecil, a 10-year veteran of the IU School of Physical Education and Tourism Management at IUPUI faculty, worked closely with the Indianapolis Convention and Visitors Association to develop a training program to assist volunteers in their welcoming efforts.

The training program was required of all Super Bowl volunteers, which included well over 250 IUPUI students, staff and faculty, and equipped them with knowledge about the city, about the various events that are part of Super Bowl XLVI celebrations and more to help surpass visitors' expectations.

Below, in her own words, Cecil describes the Super Service training program.

Cecil was also chose as one of 46 "Faces of Super Bowl XLVI": http://www.xlvifaces.com/profile/34/Amanda-Cecil/

SUPER BOWL HELPS LAUNCH INDY'S SUPER CURE

More than 700 women heeded the call of the "Indy's Super Cure" initiative Jan. 28-29, donating healthy breast tissue to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Tissue Bank at the IU Simon Cancer Center in an effort to further breast cancer research.

The IUPUI-based IU Simon Cancer Center hosted the two-day event to provide even broader research opportunities for scientists seeking clues for a disease that affects so many individuals and families. The Komen Tissue Bank is the first such facility in the world.

BEHIND THE SUPER BOWL SCENE

IUPUI's work with the Indianapolis-based Talent Alliance has turned into a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for IUPUI student Dax Thomas.

Thomas and Ivy Tech student Karen Royal were selected out of a host of Talent Alliance applicants to join Team UT (the University of Tennessee Knoxville) at this Super Bowl. Team UT has been part of the last five Super Bowls, with team members learning how to plan, prepare and carry off a large-scale sporting event. Thomas and Royal will spend three days of intensive work behind the scenes of Super Bowl XLVI at Lucas Oil Stadium. Thomas is a junior in the IU School of Physical Education and Tourism Management at IUPUI, studying sports management.

LEGACY CENTER

The Super Bowl's arrival in Indianapolis has brought a wealth of excitement to the city, but especially to the near Eastside, where Arsenal Technical High School was chosen as the site for the Chase Near Eastside Legacy Center Fitness Zone.

In conjunction with the John H. Boner Community Center, the Fitness Zone will use students, faculty and staff from the IU School of Physical Education and Tourism Management to run the center for Tech students and residents in the community surrounding the Tech campus. The IUPUI students will conduct health screenings, health and wellness classes, provide personal training, group exercise classes and individual workouts.

The NFL leaves behind a "Legacy" for Indianapolis's near east side, an added bonus for hosting the Super Bowl in 2012. James Taylor, Sarah Shore-Beck and NiCole Keith explain how it went from an idea to reality and the future of this state of the art facility.

ROTC AND THE NFL EXPERIENCE

During the Super Bowl run in Indianapolis, the NFL is expected to sell approximately $5 million in merchandise in the NFL Experience, headquartered in the Indiana Convention Center.

Members of IUPUI's ROTC program will be among the groups that will serve NFL Experience guests in their Super Bowl purchases during the 10-day run of the event. The ROTC area will be in Hall J of the Convention Center, near the main entrance to the building near the Georgia Street-Capitol Avenue intersection.

LTC Tom Rude, Military Science IUPUI, tells us how the ROTC is involved with the NFL Experience at Super Bowl 2012:

UNIVERSITY PLACE HOME TO PATRIOTS

They may be the rivals of the Indianapolis Colts, but the New England Patriots are calling University Place Hotel their "home away from home" during the week leading up to Super Bowl XLVI.

IUPUI students will be among the volunteers assisting the guests from the Northeast, providing support for hotel personnel and making sure that the Pats enjoy their time in Indy—at least until their next game against the Colts!

MAKE A (SUPER) JOYFUL NOISE

Whitney Coleman, a graduate student in the IU School of Informatics, and alumnus Lynda Sayyah are among the many performers who will dazzle audiences throughout the days leading up to the Patriots-Giants clash in Super Bowl Village.

Sayyah took to the Pepsi Stage Saturday (January 28) at 5:15 p.m., while Coleman will appear on the same stage at 1:30 p.m. on Super Bowl Sunday (February 5).

'A TASTE OF THE NFL' COMES TO GLEANERS

IUPUI students, staff and faculty will welcome some of Super Bowl XLVI's most prestigious guests to the 21st annual "Taste of the NFL" food event on Feb. 4. Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana will host the event. Dozens of PETM students will be showcasing their hospitality as servers, along with other volunteers from IUPUI.

"Taste of the NFL" provides tasty samples of the best chefs, restaurants and recipes from all 32 NFL cities. The Indianapolis Colts' representative will be Greg Hardesty of Recess and Room Four.

Among the featured guests will be the newly crowned Miss America, Laura Kaeppeler, country singing star Sara Evans and Emmy Award-winning TV host Ted Allen of the Food Network.

JAWZ, JINX, AND THE ZIPLINE

Jawz and Jinx took a trip down the Super Bowl zipline at 1 p.m. Thursday, February 2, near the Georgia Street entrance to the Indiana Convention Center. Both mascots took the "leap of faith" from the 80-foot start tower on the south end of the unique Super Bowl Village feature, and zoomed northward to the end of the line!

Check out the video below, but be prepared for the screaming: there were some big Jawz and Jinx fans on hand!

SUPER BOWL STUDY GETTING MAGAZINE TREATMENT

A research study by Soonhwan Lee and Brian Krohn, faculty members in the IU School of Physical Education and Tourism Management at IUPUI, will be featured in an upcoming issue of the journal Event Management. The study focuses on "Psychological Support from Local Residents for Hosting Mega-Sporting Events: A Case of Super Bowl XLVI."

IUSM FACULTY AMONG GROUPS TO PROVIDE URGENT CARE AT BIG GAME

Faculty from the IU School of Medicine will be among volunteers to provide basic health care services to visitors to Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis. Visitors to the Super Care Clinic, located near the Super Bowl Village, will be able to access treatment for illnesses ranging from coughs and colds to minor injuries. Indianapolis will be the first Super Bowl host city to offer a full-service urgent care center for visitors. The clinic will be open during peak periods from Friday, Jan. 27, through Sunday, Feb. 5. Throughout Super Bowl weekend, it will be open 24 hours a day.

The Super Care Clinic is operated by a coalition of Indianapolis-area health care facilities and offered in collaboration with the Super Bowl Host Committee. Physicians from the IU Medical Group provided nine staff members—doctors, nurses and registrars—on Jan. 28. For more information, visit www.indysupercare.org, or go to Twitter @SuperCareClinic.
