Volunteers are needed during Indy's Super Cure to help ensure everything runs smoothly for the 700 women who are expected to donate breast tissue.
Indy's Super Cure, a partnership between the Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Tissue Bank at the IU Simon Cancer Center ("Komen Tissue Bank") and the 2012 Indianapolis Super Bowl Host Committee, is Jan. 28 and 29, the weekend before the Super Bowl, at the IU Simon Cancer Center, 1030 W. Michigan St.
The volunteer shifts are 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. both days. You can sign up and view a listing of volunteer job descriptions at The Komen Tissue Bank. Go to the "volunteers" tab.
Training will be required for all volunteers who have not previously volunteered for the Komen Tissue Bank. The volunteer orientation sessions will be offered throughout January at various times and locations. Volunteers will receive an Indy's Super Cure volunteer T-shirt, and during their shift, they will receive a meal, refreshments, and free parking.
Questions? Contact Liz Way at komentb@iupui.edu or 274-2366.
The Komen Tissue Bank is the world's first and only healthy breast tissue bank. By collecting samples from women without breast cancer, researchers may be able to determine the differences between healthy and cancerous tissues, which could lead to a better understanding of the disease.

December 15, 2011
The 2012 Indianapolis Super Bowl Host Committee announced today (Dec. 15, 2011) a comprehensive transportation and parking plan for the safe and efficient movement of traffic and pedestrians during the upcoming Super Bowl events. In addition to the game itself, downtown will host more than 100 public and private events beginning Jan. 27, 2012, including the NFL Experience and the Super Bowl Village on Georgia Street extending from Conseco Fieldhouse to the Indiana Convention Center. The Super Bowl Village will feature live entertainment on two outdoor stages. On Capitol Avenue, a four-line ZipLine - 80 feet tall and 650 feet long - will run tandem to the street.
With the volume of indoor and outdoor activities, thousands of additional visitors and the security measures in place for the game itself, traffic restrictions are required in and around Lucas Oil Stadium, the Indiana Convention Center, and the Super Bowl Village, according to Lori Miser, volunteer co-chair of the Host Committee's Transportation and Parking Committee.
"The pedestrian-friendly plan will provide safe and efficient access to downtown for local workers and residents, while ensuring the safe and orderly flow of traffic and pedestrians around the events for all visitors," said Miser. "We're committed to providing all the information needed to go downtown to enjoy Super Bowl XLVI and encourage everyone to visit the Transportation & Parking section of the website so you can 'Know Before You Go.'"
The committee launched today the specially-designed Web portal called "Know Before You Go" under the Transportation and Parking section of the Indianapolis Super Bowl site. It includes detailed instructions about road restrictions, recommended travel routes, downloadable maps, and event parking in support of the NFL Experience and Super Bowl Village, and Park & Ride options. It will include real-time updates accessible directly on the site or by signing up for e-alerts. The Know Before You Go site will assist local residents and out-of-town visitors with the information necessary to best navigate downtown for work and various Super Bowl events.
Two special traffic routes have been recommended to help motorists easily move around downtown to avoid the streets that are closed. One route is labeled "Super" and the other "Bowl." Both routes allow motorists to cross over to parking destinations on local streets that are not restricted. Signage will be posted along the routes to help direct motorists. "Your usual direct route into the heart of downtown may not be the best choice during the Super Bowl period," said Miser. "To expedite traffic flow, these routes were designed to move motorists around the edges of downtown, efficiently and effectively."
For complete information on the Super Bowl transportation and parking plan, including details on the special routes, street restrictions, downtown parking and alternatives to driving downtown, go to the Know Before You Go site.
Due to concerns about campus access the weekend of Super Bowl XLVI, University Library will operate on a special schedule. The library will close early at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, February 3, and will reopen at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 6th. The library will be closed Saturday, February 4th and Sunday, February 6th due to large amounts of traffic expected on campus. Operating hours are subject to change February 2-7, 2012, based on traffic conditions and campus access. The library's electronic resources, including thousands of journals, ebooks and databases, are always available via our website. http://www.ulib.iupui.edu/node/12209
Dear IUPUI Staff Members,
As you know the city of Indianapolis has the wonderful opportunity to host Super Bowl XLVI. The Super Bowl is expected to draw about 150,000 visitors to Indianapolis and engage thousands of volunteers. A working group involving representatives from several campus units was formed to consider the implications of Super Bowl 2012 on campus operations and a website has been established to keep you informed of events and activities that may affect your travel plans to and from campus.
The Super Bowl will be played on the evening of Sunday, February 5th. The campus will be open on the weekend, but classes will be cancelled on Saturday, February 4th and Sunday, February 5th with the exception of classes in Medicine and Dentistry. Keep in mind that some administrative and academic offices will be closed on the weekend. In addition, it is expected that there will be difficulties encountered by people trying to reach IUPUI on Friday, February 3rd and on Monday, February 6th until about 2 pm.
Faculty members have been encouraged to consider alternative methods and locations for instruction on both Friday and Monday to ease traffic congestion and reduce stress on our students. Staff members should work with their supervisors to consider the following options to help reduce the level of activity on campus for those two days:
Remember that these options and alternative work arrangements must be approved by the supervisor and not every option will be appropriate for every position on campus. As always, some employees will be required during this time and alternative work arrangements may not be appropriate.
Since supervisors were asked to prepare business continuity plans in the event of an emergency on campus preventing us from conducting business as usual, this is a good time to review the plan and educate your staff. The Super Bowl does present a great opportunity to test those plans by implementing them on Friday and Monday.
Please review the Frequently Asked Questions section on the IUPUI Super Bowl information website and contact Human Resources 274-7614 to learn more about specific workplace policies that can make the week run smoothly for IUPUI.
Thank you for planning ahead and for helping to make our visitors' experience to Indianapolis exceptional this year.
Dawn M. Rhodes
Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration
Colleagues:
As we plan for the spring semester, I encourage you to consider potential downtown traffic problems during the week of the Super Bowl. Over 150,000 guests are expected to visit downtown Indianapolis from Monday, January 30th through Monday, February 6th. The majority of our visitors will arrive in Indianapolis on Thursday, February 3rd and remain through the football game at Lucas Oil Stadium on Sunday, leaving town throughout the day on Monday, February 6th.
The campus will be open, but classes will be cancelled on Saturday, February 4th and Sunday, February 5th with the exception of classes in Medicine and Dentistry. Keep in mind that some administrative and academic offices will be closed on the weekend. Throughout the week, students should give themselves plenty of time to get to class and to other events on campus and be thoughtful about planning special events and meetings that may be difficult for people to attend. Faculty have been asked to carefully consider the timing of quizzes and exams to anticipate problems getting to and from campus smoothly. Students should keep a close eye on adjustments to their class schedule and announcements from their faculty this spring semester.
To learn more about the impact the Super Bowl may have on our campus, please review the IUPUI Super Bowl information website. We hope you will plan ahead and help make our visitors' experience to Indianapolis exceptional this year.
Sincerely,
Zebulun Davenport
Vice Chancellor, IUPUI Division of Student Life
Dear IUPUI colleagues,
You may have seen the announcement in Inside IUPUI on October 25, 2011 [provided below] regarding classes during Super Bowl week—Monday, January 30, 2012 through Monday, February 6, 2012. The Super Bowl is expected to draw about 150,000 visitors to Indianapolis and engage thousands of volunteers. A working group involving representatives from several campus units was formed to consider the implications of Super Bowl 2012 on campus operations.
Since the Super Bowl will be played on the evening of Sunday, February 5, 2012, classes will not meet on campus on Saturday, February 4 and Sunday, February 5 with the exception of Medicine and Dentistry. In addition, it is expected that there will be difficulties encountered by people trying to reach IUPUI on Friday, February 3rd and on Monday, February 6th until about 2 pm. Given these circumstances, faculty are requested to make certain adjustments for their classes, especially for Monday morning. There are far fewer classes held on Friday, and weekend offerings were re-scheduled in preparing the campus calendar. Of course, if there is an essential class or laboratory session on Monday, you should continue to have it as planned. However, the reason for sending this memo so far in advance is to help as you prepare your curricula and schedules for next semester' classes.
These workshops—to be held at the end of November/early December—will be geared toward users who are new to tools and methods for delivering online course content. Focusing on the easiest and most efficient way to publish content online, the workshops will be delivered using the various collaboration technologies supported by IU. Individual consultations can also be arranged with CTL consultants for faculty. More workshops will be offered in early January to help faculty finalize plans for holding classes online should they choose that option.
In addition, interested faculty may also want to visit http://keepteaching.iu.edu for more information on how to best adapt their face-to-face class for online delivery.
If you need help with any of the technology options above, please refer to the Center for Teaching and Learning website at http://ctl.iupui.edu for information on upcoming workshops and/or to schedule a consultation.
Regardless of the Super Bowl, there are other reasons like a pandemic (recall H1N1), or severe weather (recall last winter's ice storm) which might lead to unexpected emergency closures. So, taking this opportunity to learn something about alternative course delivery methods is a good idea.
Please monitor the IUPUI homepage for weather updates and the campus Super Bowl website for information that could affect your travel plans to campus.
Best wishes,
Uday Sukhatme
