Welcome Back..... Again!

June 23, 2009 — I am officially back from my trip in Costa Rica and it was a blast! There was so much that I learned while being over there, it was like an entire semester of work that I developed while I was over there. Everything that I participated in during this trip enhanced my learning and allowed me to develop more skills in what I love to do.

We Rock in Service Learning!

June 12, 2009 — This week I participated in another service learning project here in Nicoya, Costa Rica, and the students once again shined. The students organized a program with senior citizens in a local nursing home where they brought games, kick ball, and danced with the seniors. It was a great experience and even better to witness the students work with the elderly and see their smiles.

What an Excursion!

June 9, 2009 — This past weekend was a wonderful excursion to La Fortuna, Costa Rica, the birth place of the Arenal active volcano. Our trip started out at 7:30 am with a 4 hour bus ride to La Fortuna. During the ride we witnessed the beautiful countryside of Costa Rica, the rich rain forest, and of course, the great people of Costa Rica. The town of La Fortuna is one of the biggest tourist towns in Costa Rica. Every corner there is a tourist shop, nice restaurants and hotels which makes this the tourists' town to be in.

Mi Casa es Su Casa

June 5, 2009 — Today I spoke with one of the General Directors of the Instituto Guanacasteco de Idiomas, Alberto Ramirez. The conversation was very informative to what this program has to offer to the students that participate. His perspective on what students will gain is very real life and very rewarding.

Today was the start of our Service Learning in the community. I was very impressed with the faculty and students that participated in the service learning. After our classes were finished, the service learning followed after where two groups were broken into two different projects. I participated where the faculty and students went to a local school and taught the kids English, played games in English and also talked discussed the importance of family.

A quick overview of my first week

May 29, 2009 — Get past the humidity, wipe down your bug bites with alcohol and drink plenty of water for the day and you will survive in Costa Rica. Honestly, it's been a great experience to this point and I can not wait for more. Today I finished my first week of classes and its been awesome! I am learning tons of Spanish and there are tons of great, interesting experiences to capture. This week has given me a lot to reflect upon and it just keeps getting better and better. I decided to discuss just a little bit about what our daily lives have been living here in Costa Rica.

I don't think I'm drinking enough water

May 27, 2009 — I have been doing a lot of walking and a lot of sweating but I don't think I'm doing well by staying hydrated. Here in Costa Rica the heat is ridiculous to the point that you are always sweating. I have been adjusting pretty well; I just have not been drinking enough water that I have noticed. I'm sweating a lot and losing a lot of fluids quickly--that is what brought me to this conclusion.

Today is my final blog post until I reach the lands of Costa Rica! To be honest, I am nervous! I have not been since this entire trip planning started but now I am getting a little nervous. I have traveled overseas before, taken long plane rides, and even had awkward living conditions and gotten nervous as well.

The Preparation

May 19, 2009 —
This week I have a lot of packing to do for my trip to Costa Rica and mainly it’s my own personal stuff (I know sad right). I made a decorative list of items I will take for this trip to capture the full experience and produce great quality work, but as for what to wear in Costa Rica, nada. It was different when packing for Iraq, LOL, all I needed was one uniform and boots and maybe some under garments or so. Luckily I do have help though in what to pack, there is a website http://costa-rica-guide.com/pack.htm that will give me some guidance on what to pack, so that is helpful. Also, our clothes will be washed on a regular basis and we will have access to use a laundry facility if we need to wash things on a urgent basis.
