Sights and Sounds : Fight Song

The IUPUI Pep Band

"Let's Go, Jags!"

That's the name, the theme and the final rallying cry of the IUPUI fight song that has become an integral part of many IUPUI gatherings, including Jaguars' home basketball games. It has become a campus-wide source of pride since Let's Go, Jags! was first introduced at the IUPUI basketball Tip-Off Luncheon prior to the 2000-01 basketball season for the men's and women's teams.

Lyrics

Proud are the voices lifted high
Cheering for IUPUI
Here's to the red, gold, black, and white
Fight, Jaguars, fight! (Go, Jags!)

We're raising by the power of two
Both Indiana and Purdue
Doubly strong, we're ever true to IUPUI

Hear now our battle cry (I-U-P-U-I)
See now our banner fly (I-U-P-U-I)
Hail to the Jaguars of IUPUI

Loyal to you we'll always be
The power of two our destiny
Doubly strong, it's victory for IUPUI
Doubly strong, it's victory for IUPUI!
(Hear now our battle cry: Let's Go, Jags!)

History

Gary Fry of the Chicago-based Catfish Music team wrote the song, and the inaugural performance was by the IUPUI Pep Band prior to the 2000-01 basketball season for the men's and women's teams, under the direction of David Copeland.

The "launch date" of the IUPUI fight song included a variety of renditions, including instrumental and vocal. Members of both the IU Singing Hoosiers and the Purdue Musical Organizations, based in Bloomington and West Lafayette, respectively, joined the Pep Band in performing the vocal versions.

Fry is a nationally renowned composer whose work has included thousands of commercials for such notable companies as McDonald's, Sears, United Airlines and more. He also has written pieces for Purdue and the University of Miami (Ohio).

A band arrangement of Let's Go, Jags! was arranged by John Tagenhorst of Wilmette, Ill., a top collegiate band composer who has worked extensively with Purdue.

The inherent theme of Let's Go, Jags! pays homage to IUPUI's roots: ties to two world-class universities, and how IUPUI draws the best from both to provide a new and unique college experience to IUPUI students, to the Indianapolis community and to the state which it serves.
