William N. Wishard Memorial Hospital

William N. Wishard Memorial Hospital, named for William Niles Wishard Sr., is Indiana's largest public hospital and is affiliated with and managed by the IU School of Medicine. During its 151-year history, Wishard has been known by several names: Indianapolis City, Marion County General, and finally Wishard, but by any name has always been the primary health-care provider for Marion County residents regardless of circumstances.

Wishard has been a teaching and research facility for the School of Medicine since 1903. William N. Wishard was the superintendent of the hospital from 1879-86, and was responsible for upgrading Wishard's facilities and improving the impact of its nursing staff.
