Taylor Symposium, USG Elections, Hunger Banquet, Jaguars Athletics
February 18, 2010 — Duration: 5:33
[C. Copp] Hi, Iím Capri Copp, your host for the February 17th edition of IUPUIís The Spot.
This week is the last week to watch your IUPUI Jaguars take to the Jungle for basketball season. The menís basketball team plays host Thursday, February 18th against UMKC at 7 pm. The following Saturday both menís and womenís basketball teams face off against Southern Utah. The womenís game begins at 4:30 pm, followed by the menís game at 7. Donít forget, IUPUI students get in free with their Jagtag.
Also this Saturday, beginning at 11 am in the Natatorium is the Summit League Championships for the menís and womenís swim teams. Good luck, and go jags! You can track their progress at iupuijags.com.
Next Thursday, February 25th the School of Liberal Arts in association with the English Department will present ďVoices in the City: Language, Literacy, and Urban Life.Ē This will be the 21st annual Joseph Taylor Symposium. The event will take place in the Campus Center from 8 am to 1:45 pm.
Do you want to be more involved on campus and represent the undergraduate student body? Then, apply for an Undergraduate Student Government executive position. The Spot spoke with Elections Chairman, Eric Keller for the details.
[E. Keller] Okay, well, USG stands for Undergraduate Student Government, and the purpose of the USG is to advocate for students; give students a voice here on campus. So, for instance, the senate is made up of senators from different organizations in order to voice the concerns of the students which those organizations represent, and then, as far as the exec members, they have different action items, but it all pretty much boils down to giving students a voice.
The applications to apply were opened on February 10th. Students are allowed to apply up until the 26th of February.
Elections will start on the 4th of March, which is the last all-candidate information meeting, because candidates, once they apply, are required to go to an all-candidate information meeting to just make sure they know all of the policies and the rules that they have to follow during campaigning.
After that, starting on March 4th, the candidates are allowed to campaign up until the general elections, when the elections actually take place, and that is April 5th through the 7th of this year.
The best way to apply is for students to go to the USG website, which is usg.iupui.edu. They can print off the application, and the best way to make sure, because for me, I like to actually give it to someone, have it in my hand, and the best way is to bring it here to the USG office, which is located in CCL, the Campus and Community Life office on the third floor of the Campus Center.
[C. Copp] USG executive applications are due by February 26th.
If you have interest in entering the medical field or just want to be inspired, attend the Cultural Leadership Luncheon on Thursday February 25th at 11:30 am in the Campus Center, room 307. The luncheon will feature motivational speaker, Dr. Clark J. Simons. RSVP at lead.iupui.edu by February 20th.
The next volunteer project with Jags in the Streets is Family Fun Night. Be a part of this fun filled night for kids and make a difference in a childís life! We spoke with Suzanne Graham for the details.
[S. Graham] Family Fun Night is put on by the Family Services of Central Indiana, and itís just an event that they put on at the IMCPL, public library downtown to get families out and interacting with each other, and IUPUI students are going to be interacting with the kids, with their families, and serving snacks, drinks, and all sorts of things; just being part of the fun.
This event is put on by Jags in the Streets, and this is a community outreach program meant to help IUPUI students, faculty, staff, friends of students, pretty much anyone just to be more involved in the community, and Family Services of Central Indiana is putting this on to get IUPUI involved and also to get families involved with each other out at the library.
If you register for Family Fun Night through Jags in the Streets at our website, which is www.bit.ly/iupuijags, you will get an email regarding where to meet. You need to tell us what size t-shirt you are because weíll give you a free Jags in the Streets t-shirt, and weíll be contacting you with any of the information youíll need.
Family Fun Night is held at the IMCPL Library on Thursday, February 25th from 4:30 to 7 pm.
[C. Copp] What can you do to help fight world hunger? Attend the 2nd annual 2010 Hunger Banquet on February 20th at 6:30 pm in the Campus Center, room 450. Purchase tickets in advance for $10. All proceeds will go to the IU-Kenya Orphans and Vulnerable Children Program. For additional information, visit ghsig.usg.iupui.edu.
Thatís it for The Spot this week. Be sure to tune in next Wednesday for the latest campus news and student activities at jagtv.iupui.edu.
Iím Capri Copp, and thanks for Spotting us!
