[S. Reed] Hi, I’m Stephen Reed, your host for the October 21st edition of IUPUI’s The Spot.
IUPUI students and staff deliver more than 74, 000 hours of service to different community agencies and schools. In an effort to strengthen service learning, IUPUI’s center for service and learning will hold two workshops for students on Friday, October 23rd. The Spot spoke with Michelle Verduzco for more information.
[M. Verduzco] I’m involved in service learning through a program that I direct that’s located in Mexico, actually in Cuernavaca, Mexico, and as part of that program, it’s an immersion program where our students learn Spanish, where they learn about the history and the culture of Mexico, and they provide service in that local community.
The workshops this Friday; one of them is more geared towards faculty and staff, the one that’s at three o’clock, “Helping Students Generate Learning from Experience”, and then the other one that’s from one to two o’clock is geared more toward the student learning assistants, and that one is “Reflection for Learning”, building the capacity of student assistants to facilitate peer led reflection activities.
What’s being offered is really how to get the most out of the learning that occurs in a direct experience of providing service in the community. What am I learning? What are some of the skills that I’m learning? Am I learning how to solve problems? Am I learning how to get along with people who have very different backgrounds and perspectives from me? Am I learning how to use resources responsibly?
There’s so many different things that students learn as a result of that direct experience of providing service in the community, and also of learning themselves from people in the community. There’s wonderful assets in our community here and also abroad, and it’s a matter of students just really coming to know what it is that they’ve learned.

In an effort to raise funds for the Susan G. Komen Foundation, the men’s soccer team will participate in their second annual ‘Kick for the Cure.’ During their game on Saturday, October 24th, the team will play in pink jerseys, which will later be auctioned off. Last year’s event brought in $2,000 for the fight against breast cancer.
As a part of the GLBT heritage month, a diversity panel discussion will be held on Tuesday, October 27th from 6 to 8 pm in the Campus Center, room 405. Topics will include; pop culture, stereotypes, media, and more as it relates to the GLBT community.
Still worried about H1N1? This week, IUPUI Health Services will provide free H1N1 vaccinations for IUPUI staff, faculty, and students who belong to the CDC priority groups of individuals who should receive vaccinations. For more information and to find out if you qualify visit: iupui.edu/h1n1/faq.
With collegiate football season coming to a close, IUPUI students turn their support to other college football teams for final games and championships. This week in Student Voices we asked if you find it beneficial for IUPUI to have its own football team. Here’s what you had to say:
[E. Smith] College football is one of those exciting things that students look forward to when they come to campus, and since IUPUI is a little less traditional, I think it would be beneficial for the student experience here.
[M. Driscoll] It brings students together and would give people more of an opportunity to, you know, socially interact with other students. It brings a lot of people around. It also brings excitement to campus.
[H. Reynolds] I think having a football team may bring out a lot more students, boost up morale for school spirit, and I think it would be really awesome to see a team here, since everybody else has to go to IU or Purdue. I think it would be really fun to have one here.
[J. Rogers] It would allow for a reason for people to congregate on campus to give one more extra-curricular activity. Football is so big, and all of the other colleges, and it’s the fact that we don’t have one; I think it hurts our campus activities.
[J. Morris] I see sports all over the place here, and that’s the only one we don’t have, and there’s a lot of football fans here, so I really think it’d be very helpful and get a lot of people out for the team.
[S. Reed] A new food operation is available at the IU School of Law on IUPUI’s campus. The Docket, open Monday through Friday, offers, pizzas, chicken burritos, quesadillas and more! The new food service is located on the first floor of Inlow Hall.
IUPUI’s Natatorium is expected to be busy this Friday, October 23rd with the men’s and women’s swim team competing against Centre College at 5:30 pm and the women’s volleyball team facing South Dakota State at 7 pm in The Jungle. Good luck and go Jags. You can track their progress at iupuijags.com.
That’s it for The Spot this week. Be sure to tune in next Wednesday for the latest campus news and student activities at jagtv.iupui.edu.
