Career Week, IUPUI Common Theme, International News Room, Student Voices,
October 01, 2009 — Duration: 4:30
[V. Tomlinson] Hi, I’m Victoria Tomlinson, your host for the September 30th edition of IUPUI’s The Spot. Stand out from the competition! During IUPUI’s career week from October 5th through October 9th you can enhance your job searching skills. These career exploration and development activities including career fairs, networking events, and career panels from many disciplines and majors. For a full listing of events visit careerweek.iupui.edu.
How can you and the rest of the campus make a healthier, greener, and a more sustainable world? IUPUI’s Common Theme Project is the answer. We spoke with a representative from the project for more information.
[D. Craig] I’m the leader of the Common Theme Project. The Common Theme Project is an effort to bring this big campus of over 30,000 students together into a shared conversation. The way we will do that is, there’s going to be a book for the campus every year that is recommended reading, and then every two years there will be new theme, with series of events, films, contests, whatnot, to get people talking about the topics related to that theme.
One of the ways that students can get involved is to read the book. Every week we have highlighted pages from the book on the website, and there is a blog that somebody writes about those pages. Students can read the blog and add their comments.
Students can attend events that are showcased on the common theme website, and one thing I really want to draw attention to for students are the contests. There are two contests on the website. One is an essay contest about Bill McKibben’s book and the common theme for this year, and in addition there is something called a “common green” contest, which asks how students can help make IUPUI more sustainable, and it comes with a cash prize, so check it out on the website under contests.

A one-stop shop for international news is at your fingers! Just bring your headphones, and head to the second floor of the University Library and choose from channels like Al Jazeera, TV9 Telegu, CCTV3 China, WOW-TV Korea and CNN Español.
Stressed from tests? Take a break and relax with Tai Chi. Through the use of slow and gentle dance-like moves, you can reduce stress and improve flexibility and balance. These free sessions occur every Monday in front of Cavanaugh Hall from noon to 1pm.
University College is encouraging students to graduate in four years. This week in Student Voices we asked if you would be able to graduate in four years. Here’s what you had to say:
[J. Mathias] I think it’s possible. Um, it just depends on your commitment level, and whether or not you are willing to take summer classes or a heavier work load.
[T. Smith] I do think it’s possible to graduate in four years. It depends how good at time management you are. I’m the kind of person who will sit out a couple hours and multi-task, so I’ll probably be watching something online, doing a paper.
[W. Groom] I’ve taken at least 15 hours each semester, so while I’m able to graduate in four years, it’s not very much fun, but it can be done.
[L. Johnson] If you stick with your academic plan, study, and work hard, it’s possible to graduate in four years. No, I’m not going to graduate in four years, unfortunately, but five, maybe. If I go to summer school, I’ll be done in five.
[V. Tomlinson] This week in sports the men’s and women’s golf teams play in the Butler Fall Invitational on October 5th and 6th starting at 8am. Coach Andrews says he hopes the women score around 305 and the men score under 300 for all rounds. To view a schedule of all Jaguars sports, check out iupuijags.com.
That’s it for The Spot this week. Be sure to tune us in next Wednesday for the latest campus news and student activities at jagtv.iupui.edu.
I’m Victoria Tomlinson, and thanks for Spotting us!
