[S. Reed] Hi, I’m Stephen Reed, your host for the September 9nd edition of IUPUI’s The Spot.
With an increase in enrollment, there is a high demand for student housing. This year, IUPUI offered furnished supplemental housing units for students located at Park Place, adjacent to IUPUI’s campus. The Spot spoke with R.A. Andrew Bennett about his experience at the new housing option.
[A. Bennett] As a graduate hall director, I supervise the R.A.s, and I also serve as the supervisor on duty one week a month, so any time there’s an incident on campus, I pretty much serve as the backup for the R.A.s.
Park Place is kind of like the home away from home. It’s actually right off White River Parkway. It’s about a 15-20 minute walk from campus, so it’s off campus, but it’s still on campus. Most residents are freshman, first year students. We have a couple second year, a couple international students, but for the most part the community is a freshmen-based community.
During the first week, we had the weeks of welcome, the WOW events. We had a barbeque. We had an ice cream social. We also had a floor decorating contest and a movie night. We have facilities that no other residential has; a pool, basketball court, tennis court, the gym right on campus, or right in the living arrangements rather. And, that’s the feel of it. It doesn’t really feel like a traditional dorm or residence hall, so I definitely like it. And, it’s an experiment, but I like it so far.
[S. Reed] How healthy are you? Come to the IUPUI Campus Center on September 15th and get to know your health a little better. Free health screenings will be provided by IUPUI Health Services Department including body fat percentage, cholesterol, flu vaccinations and much more. Visit room 309 in the Campus Center between 11am and 1pm. This event will continue throughout the year. For more healthy tips and information visit www.health.iupui.edu.
Need campus info on the go? The new IUPUI Mobile site offers access to Oncourse, emergency information, building location, news, and much more. You can even check out The Spot each week in the video section. It\'s now available on your mobile device at m.iupui.edu.
Tying campus to community, IUPUI will again sponsor Fiesta Indianapolis. In its 24th year, Fiesta Indianapolis attracts nearly 35,000 people to partake in food, music, arts and crafts, and several cultural booths. We spoke with staff member Gloria Quiroz to learn more.
[G. Quiroz] Fiesta Indianapolis is the longest running and largest Hispanic Heritage Cultural celebration. It’s going on very nearly thirty years in Indianapolis. They will have information about IUPUI. There will be different representatives from the multicultural outreach office from academic units student volunteers. They will be talking about the IUPUI experiences and giving out interactive opportunities to learn about IUPUI and what we have to offer.
Fiesta Indianapolis is a free event. Again, it’s from noon to midnight. You don’t have to bring any money, just yourselves. However, if you want to participate and take full advantage of the food that will be available and buy any merchandise from the vendors, then you’ll want to bring some extra cash. There will be ATMs located around, but it’s best if you can bring your cash for those things that you’d like to purchase onsite.
[S. Reed] Enjoy Fiesta Indianapolis from noon to midnight on Saturday, September 19th at the Veteran’s Memorial Plaza.
Support your fellow students and enjoy the School of Engineering and Technology’s 10th annual Student Design Show on Wednesday, September 16th beginning at 9am. Main events will be located throughout the Engineering and Technology building and include workshops, speakers, and student displays. Alumni will have the opportunity to network following the last presentation at 4:30.
Need technology? UITS understands, so to ensure you have all your technology needs met, they have new Student Technology Center, STC, locations for you.
[M. Wick] We provide a range of services including computing facilities, hardware, software, email, multimedia work areas, study areas for you and your friends or classmates to get together and work on things in technology or just to get together to work on projects.
Well, we have 15 locations for our STCs around campus and more coming soon. So, in order to find out where they’re located and the dates and times that you can go visit them, go to it4u.iupui.edu and you’ll find all the information under “new and coming soon” and under the S.T.C. resources tab.
[S. Reed] University Information Technology Services is committed to bringing students and technology closer together at IUPUI.
This week in sports is “pack the house week”! Bring your JagTag for free entrance into all IUPUI athletic home events and support your Jaguars. The women’s soccer team plays Detroit on September 11th at 5pm followed by the men’s soccer team against Cleveland State at 7pm.
