40th Anniversary Event, IUPUI Regatta, Student Voices,
September 03, 2009 — Duration: 5:38
Hi, I’m Gina Glaros, your host for the September 2nd edition of IUPUI’s The Spot.
From a single economics class in 1891 to the merger of Indiana University and Purdue University in 1969, IUPUI marks its fortieth year of excellence! We’ll be commemorating our 40th Anniversary with events and activities all semester long including “An Evening With Angela Brown.”
You can hear this classical vocal performance at 8pm on Friday, September 11th, at Madame Walker Theatre. Contact the Walker Theatre Box Office for ticket information.
Grab a group of friends, form a team, and raise money for women’s athletic scholarships. The IUPUI Athletic Departments hosts its 3rd Annual Jag Jaunt on Saturday, September 12th, starting at 10am. The walk takes place at the Michael A. Caroll Track and Field Stadium. For further information visit www.myiupui.com/jagjaunt.
The number of Hispanic students at IUPUI has increased by 15 percent since 2008. To celebrate IUPUI’s rich culture and diversity, we host six cultural heritage months every year. During the month of September, IUPUI celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with fashion, food, and theatre! For a complete listing of events visit life.iupui.edu
Got talent? If you think you do, auditions for IUPUI’s Got Talent are September 15th, 16th and 17th from 3 to 6pm. To schedule a time, contact John Monaghan at johmonag@iupui.edu.
Water, boating, and downtown fun! The Student Organization for Alumni Relations, the IUPUI Alumni Council, and the Indiana University Alumni Association present the inaugural IUPUI Regatta. We spoke with Katie Klco to learn more about this canoe relay on the canal.
The IUPUI Regatta is taking place on September 19th, from 11:30 to 6pm. IUPUI Regatta is a canoe race on the downtown canal. Students, faculty, staff, and alumni can compete. It’s a pretty nominal fee for student teams to register. The money goes towards building the scholarship fund for future IUPUI Students. Also at the event, besides the race, we’ll have food, live music, alcohol beverages if you’re over 21, some games, some balloon artists, caricature artists, so it’s basically a chance for the IUPUI community to get together, not just students, not just alumni, but all of us to come together and just have one really fun day.
You can sign up your team or you can volunteer at our website at iupui.edu~soar.
Tuition rates have increased and the economy worsens, yet students are still determined to go to school. This week in Student Voices we asked why you are determined to attend IUPUI. Here’s what you had to say:
[A. Miller] Well my family really encouraged me to continue my education and I want to go into the medical field so that will get me started here, and I decided to go to IUPUI because I love Indy so I wanted to be able to come here and experience that.
[A. Hesse] I chose IUPUI because it’s got a lot of expert professors and that do a good job at teaching and they’re compassionate about students, and understanding about their teaching.
[A. Brown]I like that it was in the city and then I checked out the institute, and the institute was really good and their numbers and ratings of students graduating and getting jobs was really good.
[L. Mossa-Basha] I’d like to finish a degree hopefully in biology, and continue my career. It had everything I needed and it’s close to home so I can stay in touch with my family.
[T. Wilson] The main reason why I chose IUPUI of course still close to family, not too big of a school, I like making impact on other people\'s lives, I’m in school mainly just to support my family. I know that I want to do bigger and better things when I get out of school, but also want to make an impact on other students as well. I figured that you know someplace like here, getting involved, doing things like that where you can actually, you know, dedicate something that can give back to the students here.
[W. Reuille] Definitely the career, got to further the education to get a higher paying job, and I chose IUPUI for a couple reasons, I’m going to be trying out for the golf team that was one of the reasons and the campus life is awesome down here, so that was probably my two main reasons.
I basically want to go to college to make money, I love traveling so I got to have an education to do that, and I love IUPUI because the campus is just hype all the time and a lot the people here are like really cool.
This week in sports the men’s soccer team plays in the University of Kentucky Invitational on September 4th and 6th, and the women’s cross country team faces the Dayton Flyers on Saturday, September 5th. Good luck and go jags! You can track their progress at iupuijags.com.
That’s it for The Spot this week. Be sure to tune in next Wednesday for the latest campus news and student activities at jagtv.iupui.edu. I’m Gina Glaros, and thanks for Spotting us!
