[M. Stewart]: Hello ladies and gentlemen. Welcome back to school! I’m Matthew Stewart, your host for the August 24th edition of IUPUI’s The Spot.

[M. Stewart]: US News and World Report ranked IUPUI 7th in Top up-and-coming schools. The magazine reports these colleges and universities convey the most promising and innovative changes in academics, faculty, students, campus or facilities, and recommends every to keep an eye on these schools.

[M. Stewart]: The study is part of the magazines 2010 Best Colleges in America listing. Our ranking is up from 14th last year.

[M. Stewart]: Meet other students, explore campus life, and have fun while doing it! WOW--Weeks of Welcome--is a two-and-a-half week-long celebration filled with games, food and fun. There is something for everyone with events like WOW fest, Movie in the Courtyard, and Green Generation Fair. The first events kick off Tuesday, August 25th with the New Student Welcome in Campus Center Room 450 at 3pm, followed by the Playfair at Taylor Courtyard at 4pm. [M. Stewart]: Parking at the beginning of a semester and especially the beginning of a new year can be a nightmare any students. However, with a few tips, tricks, and a bit of education, your parking woes can be set aside. Here’s Carol Pferrer, Director of Parking and Transportation Services, to fill you in.

[C. Pferrer]: The beginning of any year, on this campus, we want to encourage people to come early. Everybody’s trying to get to the exact same place at the exact same time. So have patience and get here early, start at the outer lots and work your way in.

[C. Pferrer]: There’s quite a few modes of transportation you can take to get here at IUPUI, and the one that I would probably encourage the most is the S-pass, and bring IndyGo in. All the students on the campus have an S-pass available to them so they can use any of the fixed IndyGo routes to bring them onto campus.

[C. Pferrer]: You can also bike and use the bus; they also have areas on the bus that you can bring your bike and ride the bus at the same time.

[C. Pferrer]: You can carpool; there’s ways that you can find a carpool partner through our KICKS website, and you can find that on our website and get a connection there.

[C. Pferrer]: We have our IndyGo shuttle stops and our IUPUI shuttle stops are co-located in certain areas on campus. So if you park on campus and use our own shuttle service they can take you to other stops then IndyGo can bring you downtown. So there’s no reason to, once you park your car, use your car again to get across campus. You can always use one of our shuttles.

[M. Stewart]: Every seven minutes a pedestrian is involved in an accident somewhere in the United States. With tens of thousands of students on campus and high-volume traffic, Captain Bill Abston from the IUPUI Police Department reminds you to be safe. He encourages the use of crosswalks, taking advantage of flashing warning lights, and looking both ways before crossing the street.

[M. Stewart]: Remember, don’t leave home without your JagTag. It serves not only as your campus ID, but also as a library card, a discount card and much more. The Spot met with Sarah Gries for more details.

[S. Gries]: JagTag is first and foremost your campus ID. It lets everyone on campus know you’re an active member of IUPUI and a registered student. You’ll use it to gain access to dorms and athletic events, you’ll need your ID to check out books, some faculty and staff will use it to track attendance. So you’ll definitively need to get your JagTag at some point.

[S. Gries]: Your JagTag also works as a discount card. We have everything from cell phone venders such as T-mobile to fitness centers such as Cardinal Fitness that offer discounts to IUPUI students. Currently it’s accepted almost everywhere on campus that you would need to buy anything. So you can use it for food, you can use it in vending machines, at Barnes & Noble at IUPUI, basically anywhere on campus you would need to purchase anything.

[S. Gries]: We are running 2 new promotions; one promotion is the bonus box. Basically if you deposit $1000 or more onto your JagTag, we would give you 10% back or $100 back in Bonus Bucks. The second promotion that we are doing is with Barnes & Noble at IUPUI. Basically you just spend $50 at Barnes & Noble at IUPUI during the month of August and you can get a free drawstring back sack full of goodies and coupons. All you have to do is show us your receipt showing you spent $50 or more and you will receive your free back sack. So we do encourage you to use your JagTag at Barnes & Noble at IUPUI.
