Speak with the Chancellor, Student Involvement Expo, Study Abroad Fair
September 05, 2007 — Duration: 6:01
[ K. Christopher ] Hi. This is September 5th edition of IUPUI’s The Spot. I’m Kaitlyn Christopher. As the semester gets rolling, weeks of welcome events are happening daily, soccer and volleyball are going in full strength, and some of the stresses of the semester are probably starting to kick in. Many people at IUPUI want the chance for their voice to be heard. Participating in student government or in staff or faculty councils are good ways to do that, but sometimes it’s even more satisfying to speak to the people in charge. I had the chance to speak with our Chancellor, Dr. Charles Bantz, who is making himself available to everyone in a unique way.
[ K. Christopher ] I’m in University College with Chancellor Bantz. I know a lot of students are wondering – what exactly do you do here on campus?
[ C. Bantz ] I get the chance to lead the entire administration – the students, faculty, and staff – to make IUPUI better. So I get to work with our community, to facilitate research, to facilitate teaching, and I have the responsibility to coordinate all of that work with those thousands of people.
[ K. Christopher ] That’s a really big job, I think. If students have comments or suggestions, how can they get a hold of you?
[ C. Bantz ] The best way is to send it to e-mail, of course, which is chancllr@iupui.edu.
[ K. Christopher ] If you still need another way to voice your concerns and suggestions about the things affecting you, other students, or the IUPUI campus as a whole IU President Michael McRobbie is for the first time available to meet one-on-one with students during his regularly scheduled open office hours. His first will be on Wednesday September 5th from noon to one in the University Place Conference Center Room 243. You can continue to follow his office hours schedule weekly in The Sagamore. No appointments are necessary.
You may have noticed some large tents in the UC Courtyard this week. The Spot was there as a few major Weeks of Welcome events filled the area. First, the Student Opportunities Fair was a chance to check out ways to get involved in student organizations on campus. The Spot spoke with a few groups that were there:
[ Black Student Union ] Black Student Union is an organization that allows not only black students, but all minorities to come out and support different aspects. We try to the umbrella organization for all minority groups, allowing everyone to come out and support and do different things, whether it be social or community service – just all areas.
[ IUPUI Cheerleading & Dance ] IUPUI Cheerleading & Dance is a fun way to get involved with the school. We always have a good time supporting the teams at the games. We cheer for the men’s and women’s basketball teams.
[ Pre-med Club ] We provide many opportunities for pre-med students here. We have three main committees. We have the medical conference committee, the health outreach committee, and the academic success committee. Each committee tries to outreach into certain areas that will help pre-med students.
[ K. Christopher ] Did you know that IUPUI now has over 1000 international students studying abroad here on campus? The Spot spoke with Dr. Susan Sutton from IUPUI’s Office of International Affairs about how IUPUI students can internationalize themselves:
[ S. Sutton ] When you’re doing study abroad, you can’t help but learn. You learn with every sense of your body. You learn through the normal classroom experience, but you also learn through other kinds of experiences. You are in the country 24 hours a day, you are always learning. Everything you see is relevant to what you are learning about. It’s the easiest form of learning that I know of. IUPUI has a wonderful array of study abroad programs to offer its students, programs that are unique and distinctive across the country, because they are programs that work for very busy students who have lives outside the university. They are programs that will work for students who are interested in professional or pre-professional degrees like such as engineering, nursing, business, as well as liberal arts and science. If you want to find out more about study abroad at IUPUI, the place to go is the Office for Study Abroad, which is in the Education/Social Work Building, room 2129. There you can find brochures about all of our programs as well as information about financial aid. IUPUI has a number of scholarships that specifically support you if you want to do overseas studies.
[ K. McClain ] I am currently studying abroad in Japan. I left for Japan in the spring of 2005 and have been there ever since and have loved every minute of it. I was supposed to only be there for one year, studying Japanese and Japanese culture, and I had a blast and decided that one year was not enough – let’s try two years. Two years still isn’t enough, and I’m working on my third year now. And it’s so much fun. You learn so much, not just Japanese, but as a person. I really recommend studying abroad, whether it be for three years like me, or for 6 months, 2 months or something like that. I strongly recommend everyone give it a shot.
[ K. Christopher ] Movie in the Courtyard is another growing campus tradition. Last Thursday, hundreds students and their friends enjoyed Pirates of the Caribbean – At World’s End during this popular WOW event.
Jaguars volleyball hosted the Hampton Inn Invitational this weekend in The Jungle. Check out some footage from the contest.
That’s the spot for this week. Check out the new episode starting each Wednesday on our podcast at jagtv.iupui.edu. See you later!
