Hi. This is August 29th edition of IUPUI’s The Spot. I’m Kaitlyn Christopher. The 2008 edition of U.S. News & World Report\'s America\'s Best Colleges just came out, and the report lists IUPUI as having outstanding examples three types of programs. The campus was recognized for its first-year experiences, learning communities, and service learning. In case you’re wondering, service learning engages students in community service or other community involvement as part of a for-credit course. Outside of the classroom, students, faculty and staff have lots of other ways to impact our community. One way is to volunteer, and 150 people from campus recently joined forces with the NCAA and Habitat for Humanity to help a local family in need. The Spot spoke with president Myles Brand at the home’s dedication ceremony.

[ Brand ] This is a great opportunity for IUPUI and the NCAA to collaborate in something that matters to people. Habitat for Humanity is a wonderful organization that provides housing for people who are committed to a good family life and becoming good community members. This works for everyone. The team who built this house – student athletes and students from IUPUI – working under the leadership and guidance of Habitat for Humanity created a home for these young people.

[ Kaitlyn ] Marty Posch with the IUPUI Office of Community Relations talked more about how our campus was involved:

[ Posch ] IUPUI got involved in this partnership with Habitat for Humanity and the NCAA a few months ago. This house, we have been sending volunteers here for about half of the build. We sent about 130 or 140 volunteers consisting of both staff and students. We had a great response from both groups and were able to build this lovely house behind us. This is the dedication ceremony today and we’re happy to be part of the build.

[ Kaitlyn ] If you’re interested in making a difference, IUPUI’s annual United Way Day of Caring is coming up and volunteers are still needed.

I’m here with Jaime Buki and she is a coordinator in the Office of Community service and she’s planning the United Way Day of Caring.

[ Buki ] Right now registration is open. It will be open until Wednesday, September 12th. You just go to the website and you can sign up as a team or individually and we’ll place you at a service site. We try to get 400 students, staff and faculty to come out and volunteer. Generally, we have 20 to 25 sites all around Indianapolis that have such activities as sorting through donations, taking inventory at Gleaner’s food bank, there will be some outside beautifying projects and some rehabbing houses. So we have a variety of tasks. Volunteers receive a free t-shirt, a light breakfast and a barbecue lunch.

This week in Jaguars sports, volleyball and soccer are in full swing. Volleyball hosts the Jaguars Hampton Inn Invitational this weekend on campus. Four teams will fight in The Jungle – the Jags, Tennesee-Martin, North Carolina A&M, and Central Michigan. The first game is Saturday, September 1st at 7pm.

[ Kaitlyn ] Men and Women’s soccer are both playing away matches this week. The Spot had the chance to speak with Men’s soccer coach Steve Franklin about the team’s prospects this season:

[ Franklin ] We’re here at Kuntz Stadium with Coach Steve Franklin of the men’s soccer team at IUPUI and he’s going to tell us a bit about the upcoming season:

Well, currently we’ve had two exhibition games to get ready. We played a home game here last weekend and defeated Northern Kentucky University who currently is the 6th rated team in the nation in Division II. This past weekend, we took on UIC who is ranked 6th in the country in Division I. A majority of our home games will be here in Kuntz Stadium both for the men’s and women’s soccer. It’s an ideal location and venue for the sport of soccer. It gets people up close to the game and you get to hear a little bit of the interactive comments that are made during the game and an up-close feeling for the sport itself. We will be here through the first three matches of the season and then we will return to campus at Michael Carroll stadium for our final two conference matches against Oral Roberts and Missouri-Kansas city, as well as the local game against Butler. Then, at the conclusion of the season, we’ll be back out here. This year, we’re hosting the first Summit League men’s soccer championship the 2nd week in November.

[ Katilyn ] Women’s soccer plays their first home match on September 9th versus Valpo. Check out the home schedule at iupuijags.com. Remember that students get in free to all home games with your JagTag.

As we enter the 2nd full week of the semester, there’s lots happening outside the sports complex, too. Weeks of Welcome events are happening almost daily. On Thursday, August 30th, the Study Abroad fair is a great way to learn about international opportunities. Hear from students who have travelled abroad and representatives from study abroad programs. Thursday night, check out Pirates of the Carribean At World’s End at 8pm in UC Courtyard. Bring a chair, blanket, and a friend – anyone is welcome to attend.

Next Wednesday, September 5th, head to Madame Walker Theater to experience Faces of America, a one-woman show. Check out wow.iupui.edu for more info on these and other events.

That’s the spot for this week. Check out the new episode starting each Wednesday on our podcast at jagtv.iupui.edu.

See you later!
