As a volunteer, your primary responsibilities will be one or more of the following:

Provide general information to participants at the event such as where they may recycle their electronic waste at the event and why the event is taking place.

Hand out magnets to event participants with Indiana electronic waste drop off event information and a survey URL which all participants are encouraged to take in order to gain more information about the success of the event.

Kindly remind participants to drive slowly during the event.

Where will I be volunteering?

At the IUPUI site, you will volunteer at the parking lot directly south of the Indiana State Fairgrounds at the corner of 38th Street and Coliseum Ave.

When will I be volunteering?

You will have a shift on April 30th, May 1st or May 2nd from either 8:45am – 11:30am or from 11:15am to 2:00pm. You will receive an e-mail confirmation with your specific shift information prior to the event.

Who should I contact in case I can’t attend my shift or if I have questions?

If you are volunteering at the IUPUI site, contact Jennifer Boehm at jrboehm@iupui.edu

What should I tell people if they ask me questions about electronic waste (e-waste)?

Electronic waste (or e-waste) is electronic equipment (such as computers, cell phones, etc…) that has reached the end of its life cycle.

According to the EPA Office of Solid Waste, in 2007 only 18% of these electronic products that had reached the end of their life were recycled, while 82% were disposed.*Electronic waste (or e-waste) is electronic equipment (such as computers, cell phones, etc…) that has reached the end of its life cycle.

Improper disposal of electronic waste is dangerous because toxic chemicals are often included in electronic waste, such as lead. According to the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD), a 17 inch computer monitor contains (on average) about 1.1 pounds of lead.

This is why it is important to collect e-waste and properly recycle of this waste!

The e-waste we collect today will be taken to Sims Recycling Solutions plant in Chicago, IL. Sims is a well respected electronic waste recycler.
