DENTAL SCHOOL AT IUPUI ANNOUNCES
APPOINTMENT OF NEW DENTAL HYGIENE DIRECTOR
INDIANAPOLIS
- Longtime IU faculty member Nancy A. Young of Greenwood, Ind. (46142) has been
appointed the new Director of Dental Hygiene for the IU
School of Dentistry at IUPUI.
"Professor Young brings to this important position a wealth of experience from
the academic, public health, and private practice arenas," said IU School of
Dentistry Dean Lawrence Goldblatt.
Young has been an instructor at the school since 1983, originally in a full-time
capacity. She joined the part-time faculty in 1988, but as director resumes
full-time status. Prior to teaching at IUPUI, Young held teaching positions
at both the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in Philadelphia
and Montgomery County Community College in Blue Bell, Penn. She has complemented
her academic career with more than 20 years of experience in private practice
in Indiana, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania.
Since 1993, Young has administered and coordinated the community-based Dental
Sealant Assistance Program, a preventive dentistry project sponsored by the
Oral Health Division of the Indiana State Department of Health. She has also
participated in a variety of clinical research studies at the dental school's
Oral Health Research Institute. Her expertise focuses mainly on the topics of
periodontal debridement, community-based sealant programs, and the use of problem-based
learning in dental hygiene education.
Young is a founding and contributing author of the widely known clinical textbook
"Comprehensive Dental Hygiene Care" and has also published articles in Dental
Hygiene, RDH, Dental Hygiene Seminars, and the Journal of Dental Education.
She also frequently presents continuing education courses and invited talks
to dental and dental hygiene professionals across the country.
She is a member of Sigma Phi Alpha national dental hygiene honor society and
a past president of the society's Theta Chapter. In 1994, she received the IU
School of Dentistry Alumni Association's Distinguished Dental Hygiene Alumna
Award.
Young holds both an associate's degree in dental hygiene (1973) and a bachelor's
degree in public health dental hygiene (1974) from IU. She also received a master's
degree in education from Temple University in 1981 and is currently pursuing
her doctorate in higher education administration at IU.
Young replaces former director Evelyn R. Oldsen, who led the division from 1975
until her retirement in May 2001.
