WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM BRINGS BLEND OF VETERANS AND NEWCOMERS TO HARDWOOD FLOOR

INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI women's basketball team enters the 2001-02 season in their seventh year under the helm of Head Coach Kris Simpson. The team presents itself with a good blend of veterans and newcomers.

Eight letter-winners return to the Jaguars who reached the semi-finals of the Mid-Continent Conference Tournament. Two transfers and three true freshmen join the squad.

The Jaguars are looking to the newcomers to help add more quickness to the squad and presence in the post. They will push the returning players for playing time and give IUPUI some depth and options.

"When you add the talent of the newcomers to the mix of returning players, we should be pretty good," said Simpson. "We have a lot more quality depth than before. We expect to be able to do a lot more things, both offensively and defensively."

"We have some returning players that will be really pushed for playing time. If our returnees hold their positions, the newcomers will have that much more time to learn our system. That can only help us."

In addition to their conference schedule, the Jags will play teams from the ACC (Florida State), Big 12 (Kansas State), Big East (Miami), Conference USA (South Florida), MAC (Ball State, Central Michigan, Ohio), Horizon League (Cleveland State, Loyola-Chicago), Missouri Valley (Indiana State) and Ohio Valley (Eastern Illinois).

"It's another good schedule for us this year. We're playing some pretty big name schools from some very good conferences. Those games will challenge us," said Simpson. "We also have games that will help make us better. Playing in these hostile gyms will help us get ready for the conference season."
