Wireless Network Available At IUPUI
INDIANAPOLIS - University Library and University College on the IUPUI campus have announced a collaborative initiative with the creation of a new computing experience. Effective immediately, a public beta wireless network will be available for all IUPUI students, faculty, and staff.
The University Library/University College, Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) will allow users to roam about the University Library and the University College buildings with a laptop or handheld computer while maintaining a connection to the Internet, Email, library databases, etc. This will support the use of technology for personal academic and group studies. Library databases, IUCAT and other library online resources will be available to use within centralized public study areas of the library. Lounge areas and public study spaces are available on the 2nd floor of the University College building for individual and group study, as well as food and beverage areas on the 1st floor and lower level.
"The wireless laptop services previously established within the University College support all of our entering students in Orientation and in the Learning Communities," said Scott Evenbeck, Dean, University College, "and I feel that this collaborative initiative with the University Library is vital to extending the effectiveness of the wireless technology that builds on our instructional team model."
David Lewis, Dean of the IUPUI University Library, stated, "The University Library prides itself its on innovative use of technology in service to our students, faculty and staff. We are particularly pleased that through this partnership with the University College we create a centralized campus corridor for wireless connectivity."
The current WLAN supports Microsoft Windows 9x, Windows ME, Windows NT 4.0, and Windows 2000 as well as Apple OS 9.x and OS 10.x. Standard equipment consists of an IBM compatible laptop or an Apple PowerBook with a type II PC Card (PCMCIA) card slot with a Lucent, Orinoco, or Avaya Silver or Gold 802.11B wireless network card, or an Apple PowerBook or iBook with an AirPort wireless network card.
