IUPUI HONORS ITS TOP UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS
Carrie Shappell and Dean Hertzler were honored as IUPUI's top female and male students at an event that paid tribute to the 100 outstanding junior and senior students for their academic performance, involvement in campus life and service to the community.
The IUPUI Alumni Advisory Council and the Student Organization for Alumni Relations sponsored the event, which was held April 6 at the Westin Indianapolis Hotel.
To be eligible, students had to be a degree-seeking junior or senior on the Indianapolis campus, completed a minimum of 56 credit hours applicable to his or her degree program with a minimum of 25 completed at the Indianapolis campus, and achieved a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7.
Special recognition was given to the top 10 male and female students, with one male and one female student identified as most outstanding. The top male and female students each received a $500 award. Recognition awards also were presented to the top 10 male and female students. The top 10 women and men students are:
Top Ten Women
Kathryn Andrews
Kathryn Andrews, a School of Education student, holds membership in the Kappa Delta Pi and Golden Key Honor Society. She has presented at the Conference on Equity, Democracy and Standards. Kathryn has demonstrated strong leadership on campus as vice-president and president of the Education Student's Advisory Council. She has also served on the Education Senate. She is an active participant in Team IUPUI and worked with the Student Activities Fair. Outside of campus, Kathryn is active as a youth minister with the Catholic Youth Organization and has served as a Religious Education Teacher. She has also served on the Youth Athletic Board and was Chairman of the coaches' commission at St Roch.
Veronica Bannon
Veronice Bannon, a School of Science student, holds numerous memberships in honors organizations including: Phi Eta Sigma, Alpha Kappa Delta, Psi Chi Member. She serves as a School of Science Student Ambassador. Her honors and awards include School of Science Alumni Association Outstanding Science Student candidate, and School of Science Dean's Scholar. Veronica is the author of the IUPUI Psychology Department newsletter and holds a certification in Crisis Prevention Intervention. She is a leader on campus, serving as president of the IUPUI Psi Chi chapter and is an active member of the School of Science Student Council and IUPUI Student Foundation. Her volunteer work extends off campus to Wheeler Mission, Prevent Blindness Indiana and Martin Luther King Day-ON. Veronica is a previous Top 100 student.
Anne Bechdolt
Anne Bechdolt, a School of Liberal Arts student, received the Robert V Krich Scholar Award for the highest GPA in the political science department. She is a member of the Golden Key International Honor Society as well as Pi Sigma Alpha. She was a founding member and the current president of the IUPUI Model United Nations Team. She has also held the offices of president of the Political Science Student Association, Publicity Chair of the Phi Alpha Delata pre-law fraternity, and co-comptroller of the Undergraduate Student Assembly. Her volunteer activities include: the Evan Bayh for Senate Campaign, Andy Horning for Mayor campaign, voter registration drives and the IUPUI Day of Caring.
Tracey Bush
Tracey Bush, a Herron School of Art student, has held High Honors status and was recently recognized for her creative work with an Honorable Mention in the Student Show at Herron. She serves as student representative to the Herron alumni board as well as treasurer for the Student Organization for Alumni Relations. Tracey served as program chair for Homecoming Theme week this past year, and keeps the Jaguar spirit going on campus, volunteering as "Jinx". Her volunteer activities include Southport Christian Church Disciples of Christ Worship Committee and Herron New Student Welcome Day. Tracey is a previous Top 100 student.
Maida Cisic
Maida Cisic, an Allied Health student, has appeared on the Undergraduate honors list and Dean's list. She has served as a member of the Undergraduate Student Assembly House of Representatives and the Respiratory Therapy Club. For the past three years, Maida has served as president of the Student Organization of Alumni Relations, leading SOAR in programming such as IUPUI's Career Exploration Day as well as Homecoming. She also serves as a student representative to the Indiana University Alumni Association Executive Council. Maida holds membership in the American Association for Respiratory Care and the Indian Society for Respiratory Care. Her outside volunteer work includes Teens Against Tobacco Use, Camp Super Kids for Children with Asthma and the Riley Cheer Guild. Maida is a previous Top 100 student.
Melissa Halioris
Melissa Halioris, a School of Education student, holds several scholastic honors including membership in the Kappa Delta Pi/Pi Omicron, Alpha Sigma Lambda and the Golden Key societies. She is an Outstanding Scholarly Achievement honoree and has held the offices of secretary and president of Kappa Delta Pi society. She has also served on the Education Students Advisory Council as vice president. Her community involvement includes the Rise Learning Center, American Red Cross and Earth Day: Reading is Fundamental Project -Recycle Reading.
Amy Owens
Amy Owens, a School of Nursing student, has achieved scholastic honors as a member of Alpha Lambda Delta, Phi Eta Sigma, and Golden Key National Honor Society. She has also been nominated for the 2001 Spirit of Nursing Award. Amy has been named a David L. Robbins Scholar, IU Alumni Association Scholar, Theta Alpha Lambda Scholar and a Hendricks County Retired Teacher Association Scholar. She is vice president of the Student Organization for Alumni Relations (SOAR) and Chair of the fund raising committee for her senior class in Nursing. She has been a volunteer at Hendricks Community Hospital, Plainfield Baptist Church and a local daycare for children. Amy was named the most outstanding IUPUI female student in 2000.
Carrie Shappell
Carrie Shappell, an Education major, has achieved numerous academic honors, making the Athlete Academic Advisors List four times and has been identified on the School of Education Academic Honors and the Mid-Continent Academic All Conference lists. She has been very active in academic committees, including the Athletic Mentor Advisory Committee and the IUPUI Athletics Committee. Additionally, she holds membership in Kappa Delta Pi, Phi Eta Sigma and the Golden Key National Honor Society. In October, she served as the kick-off speaker for the NCAA Stay-In-Bounds program. Her community service includes IUPUI Day of Caring, chairing the Adopt a Family program and participation in Race for a Cure. Carrie is a previous Top 100 student.
Shannan Thompkins
Shannon Tompkins, a Kelley School of Business student, is a Community Service Scholar Leader and America Reads Team Scholar. She was recognized on the National Dean's List and given the President's Award for Service. She is vice president of community affairs for Delta Sigma Pi and a member of the Marketing Club and University Library Advisory Committee. She served as an AmeriCorp volunteer and serves on the steering committee of the IUPUI Student Foundation. Her volunteer work also includes serving as volunteer coordinator for the Big Sisters of Central Indiana Annual Auction. Shannon is a previous Top 100 student.
Renea Vealey Hill
Renea Vealey Hill, a School of Liberal Arts student, has held numerous academic distinctions including Pi Sigma Alpha member, vice president of the Golden Key International Honor Society, and president of Alpha Sigma Lambda. Scholastic honors include Adult Achievement Scholarship, the Margaret A Cook Foreign Study Scholarship and listing on the Dean's list 13 of 18 continuous semesters and summer sessions since 1996. She has demonstrated leadership at IUPUI as Undergraduate Student Assembly secretary, and as treasurer and finance chair to the Phi Alpha Delta law fraternity. Renea is a volunteer for both Martin Luther King Day of Caring and United Way Day of Caring. She is a previous Top 100 student.
Top Ten Men
TyRee Ampey
TyRee Ampey, an Engineering and Technology student, has received many scholastic awards including the IUPUI Loyalty Award and the Ford Minority Engineering Advancement Program Scholarship. He is actively involved in the National Society of Black Engineers, chairing many committees as well as serving as Chapter President from 1999-2001. TyRee was named Member of the Year for his involvement in NSBE at the Region IV Annual Spring Regional Conference. He is also active in his community, taking part in the Sponsor a Family program in which families are provided groceries and gifts during the holiday season through the Ford African American Network, as well as participating in the Circle City Classic Parade. TyRee is a past IUPUI Top 100 student.
Damon Bell
Damon Bell, a Physical Education student, holds a number academic awards and honors. He is a member of the Chi Alpha Sigma Indiana Mu honors society and was named to the Academic All Conference Team for the Mid Con Conference in May of 2000. He holds several scholarships and was a finalist at IUPUI Speech Night. In addition to playing on the Jaguar varsity men's tennis team, he is president of the Tourism and Hospitality Society and a member of the Physical Education Student Academic Affairs committee. Damon's community involvement includes volunteering for several events and organizations, including RCA Nike Playground and the Special Olympics. Damon is a previous IUPUI Top 100 student.
Scott Bomkamp
Scott Bomkamp, a Science student, is an accomplished student, researching the synthesis of an important ligand to create two novel metal complexes in the IUPUI laboratory. He is an active member of the American Chemical Society and a Phi Eta Sigma honors society member. A seven-time recipient of Academic Highest Honors, he has been accepted into several graduate programs including: Stanford, Cornell, and Princeton. He serves as president of the IUPUI Chemistry Club and a member of School of Science Student Council. Outside of the university he coordinated a Thanksgiving Canned Food Drive and mentored students in a Science Appreciation Camp. Scott is a previous IUPUI Top 100 student.
Michael Coatney
Michael Coatney, a Liberal Arts student, is a member of several national honor societies including Lambda Pi Eta, Alpha Lambda Delta and Phi Eta Sigma. He has received numerous academic honors and awards, including the Rebecca Pitts Scholarship and the Cavanaugh Awards presented to the outstanding Liberal Arts scholar. His campus leadership is evident as president of Stagecrafters, where he wrote a grant for and directed the student production of Antigone. He has served as a member or officer in many student organizations on campus including the Honors Club, Drama Club, Film Studies Club, and the Undergraduate Student Assembly. Michael's Service does not end on the IUPUI campus, he has served many community theater and playwriting organizations, and volunteered with the Indianapolis Neighborhood Resource Center, writing grants. Michael is a previous Top 100 student.
Nicholas Datzman
Nicholas Datzman, a Science student, has a long list of academic achievements and honors. He was named to University College Highest Honors for two terms, is a Golden Key National Honor Society inductee, and an Alpha Lambda Delta member. He holds the certification of Emergency Medical Technician - Basic. His enthusiastic leadership as vice president of the Chemistry Club turned its membership into a flourishing organization. Nicholas is also a member of the Indiana Health Student Association as well as the American Medical Student Association. Off campus, he volunteers at St. Vincent's and Riley Children's Hospitals and provides the students of John Marshall Middle School with a science role model.
Kristopher Davis
Kristopher Davis, a Liberal Arts student, holds several student awards including the William L. Garret Award and a Summer Research Opportunity Program Fellowship. He is a Spanish major and has done research including "Evolution of the Subjunctive Mood from Latin to Spanish" and the " African Influences in Antillean Spanish". Kristopher is a member of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese as well as the Phi Alpha Delta fraternity. His leadership on the IUPUI campus is evident in his role as Speaker of the House of Representatives for the Undergraduate Student Assembly, and president of the Latino Students Association. Off campus he volunteered with "We're Helping Youth" and the Eiteljorg Hispanic Council. Kristopher is a previous Top 100 student.
Dean Hertzler
Dean Hertzler, a Science student, has been recognized for his leadership qualities, being appointed as the Student Trustee to the Indiana University Board of Trustees. He also serves on the Purdue School of Science Dean=s Council as well as the IUPUI Board of Advisors. Dean counts among his honors a first place in the Science Undergraduate Research Symposium, the McGuaghey Leadership Award and Science Dean=s Scholarship. He has also provided leadership in student affairs as president of the Science Undergraduate Student Council, senator for the Undergraduate Student Assembly and vice-president for the IUPUI Student Foundation. He is a member in the Golden Key Honor Society and recognized in Who=s Who Among Colleges and Universities. Dean was recognized last year as THE Most Outstanding Male Student at IUPUI.
Shanit Lall
Shanit Lall, a Science student, has been inducted into the Golden Key International Honors Society as well as the IUPUI Honors Club. He received the School of Science Outstanding Student Award and the IUPUI Honor Upperclassman Award. He has demonstrated leadership on campus holding the office of President in the Honors Club, Secretary in the Physics Club and is the Student Council Rep for the Biology Club. His civic responsibility is evident through his participation in the White River Reforestation project, organizing blood drives and volunteering at a retirement home. It should also be noted that Shanit was recognized at this year's Homecoming as the 2000 Participation Scholarship recipient for the School of Science.
David Lyvers
David Lyvers, a Science student, has been recognized for outstanding academic performance with the Anna K. Suter scholarship and the Dean's Scholarship from the School of Science. He is treasurer of the Golden Key International Society and a member of Alpha Lambda Delta Academic and Phi Eta Sigma societies.He plays in the Intramural Racquetball league and is a representative to the House of Organizations as well as a member of the Chemistry Club. Outside of IUPUI David volunteers at a nursing home and the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society. David is a previous Top 100 student.
Chad Pulley
Chad Pulley, a Kelley School of Business student, is a member of the National Athletics Collegians Honor Society. He is a National Student Athlete Day Award recipient. He has also received the honor of being named to the Purdue Athletic Director's List and received the Mathematical Skills Acknowledgment Award. If you look closely you can find him in the IUPUI Campus Recruitment video. Chad serves as co-captain of the IUPUI men's golf team and vice-president of the Student Athletic Advisory Committee. His community service history is varied, working with children at the Indianapolis Christamore House, teaching junior golf and participating in the SAAC food drive and Adopt-a-Family.
