UNIVERSITY LIBRARY FEATURES BLACK AMERICAN ART DISPLAY
INDIANAPOLIS
- In recognition and celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and Black
History Month, IUPUI University Library is currently hosting a cultural display,
scheduled through February 28, 2002. The installation, entitled "Seeing
Through Black American Eyes," features the private collections of IUPUI
Professor William E. and Dr. Joyce G. Taylor, as well as fine art created by
national artist Dr. Margaret T. Burroughs and Indianapolis resident Bruce Armstrong.
The Taylor collection will also be the focus of a lecture and reception featuring
William and Joyce Taylor hosted by the IUPUI
University Library on Tuesday, February 12, at 6 p.m. in the Lilly Auditorium,
lower level. The program is free and open to the public.
William and Joyce Taylor have been researching the history of African American
visual artists for over 20 years, and the display of books, catalogs, posters
and periodicals from their collection reflect the range of this focus. Significant
contributions to the retrospective of books include historic and contemporary
titles of, "The New Negro" and "6 Black Masters of American Art," as well as,
"From Sambo to Superspade: Black Experience in Motion Pictures" and "Romare
Bearden, His Life & Art."
The Taylor collection also includes art exhibition catalogs from installations
at the Museum of Modern Art, National Museum of Art, Studio Museum of Harlem,
Philadelphia Museum of Art, Bucknell University and the Indianapolis Museum
of Art. Posters from national Black History exhibitions, and periodicals like
The International Review of African-American Art and Black Enterprise complete
the collection display.
Professor William E. Taylor, a graduate of Indiana University, has provided
a sampling of his own sculpture art for the University Library display. Also
included are linocut prints of Dr. Margaret T. Burroughs, founding director
of the DuSable Museum of African-American History, Chicago, Ill. Bruce Armstrong
studied art at Crispus Attucks High School and Indiana University and his art
pieces featured in the display include pastels, acrylics and charcoal, all created
in 2000-2001.
The "Seeing Through Black American Eyes" display is located in the
University Library Level One Lobby, 755 West Michigan Street. Public parking
