NURSING
PROFESSOR HONORED FOR CONTRIBUTIONS TO FIELD
INDIANAPOLIS - The American Academy of Nursing has honored IU School of Nursing (IUSON) Associate Professor and Diversity and Enrichment Director Lillian Gatlin Stokes for her commitment and contributions to nursing by nominating her for fellowship to the organization.
The Academy nominated 68 new Fellows this year who include university deans and professors, nurse researchers, hospital executives, advanced practice nurses and political appointees at the local, state and federal level. The Fellows will be formally inducted this fall.
"Lillian's nomination as a fellow is proof positive of her national reputation as an educator, particularly with regard to understanding the importance of diversity in teaching and care giving," said IUSON Dean Angela McBride. "In her four books, in her raising of hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarship monies for minorities, and in her writings on strategies to enhance cultural sensitivity, she has developed new models for meeting the needs of minorities while engaging the larger community in these enrichment programs."
Stokes has been teaching at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) since 1969 and at the IU School of Nursing at IUPUI since 1972. In 1996, the school named her Director of Diversity and Enrichment.
Stokes earned her bachelor's degree from North Carolina Central University and her master's and doctoral degrees from Indiana University in Bloomington. Prior to teaching at IUPUI, Stokes served as a staff nurse at several hospitals in Virginia, Illinois, and Indiana.
Stokes is also active in many community and nursing organizations both locally and across the nation. She is a member of the American Nurses Association, the Indiana State Nurses Association, the National League for Nursing, the Indiana Citizens League for Nursing, Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Sigma Theta Tau, the Midwest Nursing Research Society, and the Coalition of 100 Black Women.
Stokes has also received numerous honors throughout her career including the Distinguished Alumni Award from North Carolina Central University this year, the American Nurses Association's Mary Eliza Mahoney Award in 2000, the Distinguished Hoosier Award from Governor Frank O'Bannon in 1998, the Madame C. J. Walker Outstanding Woman of the Year from the Center for Leadership Development in 1996, and many more.
The American Academy of Nursing was founded in 1973 to serve the public and nursing profession by transforming health care policy through the development, dissemination, and integration of nursing knowledge into practice.
