STAFF COUNCIL HAS ALMOST TRIPLED IN SIZE
With 91 voting members, the IUPUI Staff Council is ready for the 2000-01 academic year. According to the bylaws, the purpose of the council is to act as a voice of the staff and to represent the staff in the communication processes and decision making of the University.
“The major challenge of the Staff Council is getting the word out to the IUPUI community,” said Yvonne Owens, IUPUI Staff Council President. “We are here. We are here to serve staff.”
The Council has experienced tremendous growth since its inception. The Council held their first meeting in August 1979 with a total of 32 members. Today, with 91 members, the Staff Council consists of elected representatives from 25 academic and administrative units on campus. Each unit is permitted at least two seats on the Council. Not everyone on campus is aware of the existence of the Staff Council. In fact, some units have not elected representatives and there are currently 20 vacancies.
“Our major problem is identity crisis,” Owens added. “Not many people are aware that we are here.”
Some of the past Staff Council achievements include creation of Fitness Day and Health Fair, enhancements to the Fee Courtesy program, availability of “A” parking permits to all staff and sponsorship of Faculty and Staff awards.
The most recent achievement of the Staff Council is the introduction of an IUPUI staff credit card displaying the Jaguar logo. The MBNA credit card revenues will post directly to the Staff Council Foundation account. According to Owens, the revenue will be used to fund scholarships for the children and grandchildren of IUPUI staff.
“We are here to serve staff,” said Owens. “We want to reach as many people as we can.”
Staff Council meetings are held on a monthly basis in the Hoosier Room of the Union Building. The November meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, November 15 from 3-5pm. Topics include the new IUPUI fight song, as well as discussions on the increase of campus accidents. IUPUI staff will have the opportunity to voice their concerns and give suggestions on how to decrease the number of automobile accidents on campus to special guest John Mulvey, IUPUI Chief of Police. All staff members are welcome to attend.
