IUPUI EXHIBIT FOCUSES ON PLACES OF WORSHIP IN CONTEMPORARY ART

INDIANAPOLIS - Places of worship are the focus of an exhibit opening Dec. 4 at the IUPUI Cultural Arts Gallery.

"Spiritual Places: Churches, Synagogues, and Other Places of Worship in Contemporary Art," a national showing of photographs, ceramics, and drawings by nine artists, including Pate Owings of Indianapolis, will run through January 21 at the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis gallery, located in Room 115 of the University College, 815 W. Michigan Street. An opening day reception will be held from 3:30 - 5 p.m. Dec. 4.

"Setting the state for a thoughtful discussion as we enter the most sacred time of year, 'Spiritual Places' looks at various artists' interpretations of what is a spiritual place and how best to translate it visually," said gallery director Wyona Lynch-McWhite. "Sometimes literal, but often abstract, these works transform the IUPUI Cultural Arts Gallery into its own sacred site."

Other artists featured in the exhibit are Daniel Botkin of Peoria, Ill; John Byrne of Portland, Maine; Rex Fogt of Whitehouse, Ohio; Lorena Johnson, of Springfield, Ill.; Dan Sullivan of Iowa City, Iowa; Jen Swearington of Asheville, N.C.; Lisa DeLoria Weinblatt of Bayside, N.Y.; and Linda Ziemke of Temperance, Minnesota.

The Cultural Arts Gallery is open daily, except during the week between Christmas and New Year's. For specific hours, call (317) 278-2817.

For additional information about the exhibit, call (317) 274-2931.
