IUPUI HONORS INDIVIDUALS AND ORGANIZATIONS
WHO SUPPORT CAMPUS; SAM JONES TO RECEIVE CHANCELLOR'S MEDALLION
IUPUI faculty and staff will honor more than three dozen people and organizations April 26 for their support of the campus at IUPUI's 13th annual Spirit of Philanthropy Luncheon.
The event will run from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. in the Wabash Room at the Indiana Convention Center.
Indiana University President Myles Brand will be the featured speaker at this year's gathering, sponsored by the Center On Philanthropy, the IU Foundation and the Office of External Affairs.
Among those who will be honored is Sam Jones, who will receive the Chancellor's Medallion from IUPUI Chancellor Gerald Bepko.
Jones has served as director/president/CEO of the Indianapolis Urban League, since 1966. The Chancellor's Medallion is presented to recognize individuals for high achievement or significant accomplishment in a profession; for distinguished service as a public official at the local, state, or national levels; or for significant philanthropic endeavors or service to the local, state, national or international communities.
"In Indianapolis, you would be hard pressed to find someone who does not know of the work of Sam Jones or who has not benefited in some way from his engagement with community issues and organizations," Bepko said. "He has reached out to every facet of the community, lending his unconditional support and serving as an excellent communicator among diverse groups. His optimism, empathy, and unique ability to create alliances and shared goals provide inspirational leadership we all admire."
"Sam Jones has been a guiding force in the creation and evolution of community programs encouraging equality for African Americans and developing support networks in housing, employment, health care, education, and citizenship," Bepko said. "He has been a valued member of the IUPUI Board of Advisors and has worked closely with the IU School of Nursing."
Each year, schools and programs present Spirit of Philanthropy Awards to people or organizations, including both public and private companies.
"These people and organizations have contributed significantly, not only with their financial resources but with their time and their community ties to help make IUPUI an integral part of the city and the state," said Ken Ayres, with the IU Foundation, who once again organized the event.
