IUPUI MEN'S SOCCER TEAM TO HOST MARIST IN THE NCAA PLAY-IN GAME ON SATURDAY

The IUPUI men's soccer team captured the school's first ever Mid-Continent Conference Championship this past weekend as the Jaguars defeated Oakland 2-1 in three overtimes and advanced to the NCAA Play-In game this Saturday against Marist College.

The Jaguars, now 10-8-2 on the season, will take on the Red Foxes, winner of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, at 1 p.m. at the IU Michael A. Carroll Soccer Stadium with the winner advancing to the NCAA Tournament. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students.

The Jaguars took the long road to the title as IUPUI defeated the No. 1 seed Western Illinois 1-0 in the semifinals before taking care of the No. 2 seed Golden Grizzlies on Sunday. The scenario was very similar as Marist, 11-9 on the season, also was the No. 4 seed and had to defeat the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds in back-to-back days to advance. The Jaguars took home the hardware after senior forward Tommy Dunlap (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota H.S.) scored with less than a minute left in the third OT as IUPUI advanced to the university's first NCAA Tournament event since moving to NCAA Division I in 1998.

The Jaguars are led junior goalkeeper Armando Femia (South Bend, Ind./Adams H.S.), who was named the Mid-Con Tournament Most Valuable Player after he stopped 12 shots in the win over Oakland and nine others in the win over WIU. Femia recorded his 17th career shutout on Saturday, which moved him to the top of the IUPUI career charts. Teammate senior forward Thies Hermann (Bliedersdorf, Germany/Jennings County H.S.), along with Femia, named to the first team All-Mid Con, set new IUPUI career standards this year with 45 career goals and 106 points.
