INDIANAPOLIS - An archaeological exploration of a local neighborhood, the state's newest immigrants, economic literacy among youngsters, and religion and urban culture are some of the topics to be discussed Saturday, Oct. 27, as the IU School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI presents Dean's Day 2001.
The annual celebration, open to the public, will be held from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Oct. 27 at University Library, 755 W. Michigan St. Registration begins at 8:15 a.m. in the lobby of the Ruth Lilly Auditorium, located on the lower level of the library. The theme, "Liberal Arts: Serving Indianapolis," focuses on the role the IU School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI plays within the Indianapolis community through research, scholarly learning and service.
"The IU School of Liberal Arts has long played a critical role in the Indianapolis community," said Glenn Merry, one of the event organizers. "Dean's Day 2001 will pay homage to the relationships and experiences between the school and the city."
IUPUI anthropology Professor Paul Mullins, Ransom Place resident Thomas Ridley, and Ransom Place past president Daisy Borel will begin the day of discussions and seminars with a presentation titled "Uncovering the Questions that Matter: Archaeology and Community History in Ransom Place."
Several Indianapolis community leaders, along with outstanding IUPUI professors, students and alumni, will serve as discussion facilitators for six other sessions. Community participants include Carmel High School teacher Michelle Foutz; Paul Freeman, Indiana Bankers Association; freelance writer Susan McKee; Maru Villalta, past-president, Hispanic Education Center Board of Directors; and Russel Wright, principal, Wanamaker Elementary School.
Registration, which includes lunch at the University Place Hotel, 850 W. Michigan St., is $35 for general admission and $15 for students with ID. The lunch program includes the presentation of the school's 2001 Distinguished Alumni Service Award.
The deadline for registration is Oct. 24. For additional information, or to register, call (317) 274-8905.
