IUPUI SOCCER SCORES GOAL FOR LITERACY
INDIANAPOLIS - IUPUI will help Indianapolis kids learn to read by collecting new or slightly used books at two upcoming soccer games.
SCORE, or Soccer Creates Opportunities for Reading Enjoyment, is a program that was developed last year to provide books to IUPUI's America Reads program which offers reading assistance to local children.
"It is a challenge to find affordable books to use with our children at our tutoring sites," said IUPUI America Reads Coordinator Amy Slutz. "Through the SCORE program, not only do we get books for our America Reads program, but it becomes possible to give books to the children to have as their own. For some, these are the only books they have."
At the soccer games against Oakland University on Friday, September 29 at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, October 1 at 2 p.m. admission is only $1 with the donation of children's book. On Friday, attendees can catch the IUPUI women's soccer team and on Sunday, the men's soccer team will play. The games are held at the Michael A. Carrol Track and Soccer Stadium, 1001 W. New York St.
America Reads is a national program developed to help elementary students read at their grade level by third grade. IUPUI's America Reads program provides IUPUI students as free tutors to area schools and community centers. The students gain valuable experience and the children receive much-needed reading assistance. Last year 75 tutors provided nearly 10,000 hours of free tutoring.
For those who cannot attend the game, there will be bins to collect books on the first floor of IUPUI's University College, 815 W. Michigan St. from October 2-6.
Books should be appropriate for children in preschool through sixth grade.
