University Library Hosts Kurt Vonnegut Mini Film Series

INDIANAPOLIS - As part of Indianapolis' Year of Kurt Vonnegut celebration, IUPUI University Library is sponsoring the "Writer's Mind" film series. This series of film screenings and discussions explores the life and literary contributions of author and Indianapolis native Kurt Vonnegut.

A screening of Slaughterhouse-Five will be held on Tuesday, April 17 from 6:00 to 8:30 pm in the Lilly Auditorium (located on the first floor of University Library). Matthew Socey, NUVO film critic and WFYI correspondent, will give a pre-screening talk about the film. A post-screening discussion of the book's adaptation to film will be led by Jim Powell, English professor at the IU School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI.

Two interviews with Kurt Vonnegut will be screened on Thursday, April 19 from 6:00 to 8:30 pm in the Lilly Auditorium at University Library. In So It Goes…, A BBC production, Vonnegut discusses his family history, his start as an author, and his World War II experiences. He relates how these encounters helped him to create the vivid, off-beat world found in his works. Writer's Workshop: Kurt Vonnegut, a PBS film, is a taped discussion/interview of Kurt Vonnegut with writing students at the University of South Carolina. Topics of discussion include the writing process, the publishing industry, and Vonnegut's life and works. Tom Marvin, English professor for the IU School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI, will give a pre-screening talk. Marvin is the author of Kurt Vonnegut: A Critical Companion, a biographical profile of Vonnegut and literary analysis of Vonnegut's works.
