Nominations and Applications Sought for Taylor Diversity Awards

INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI faculty, staff and students are invited to submit nominations and applications for the seventh annual Joseph T. Taylor Awards for Excellence in Diversity.

The Taylor awards are presented in honor of the late Dr. Joseph T. Taylor, the first dean of the School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI. Chancellor Charles R. Bantz will present the awards during the annual Joseph T. Taylor symposium, which takes place on February 15, 2007. The symposium is sponsored by the IU School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI.

First presented in 2001, the Taylor awards recognize faculty, staff or students for exemplary work that has either increased the recruitment and retention of African-American, Hispanic and Native American faculty, staff, and students; enhanced the campus atmosphere for diversity; or engaged the IUPUI community in promoting diversity.

Joseph Taylor died in September 2000 after more than 30 years of service to Indiana University. He was a sociology professor from 1965 to 1983 before serving as dean from 1967 to 1978. Taylor was instrumental in negotiating the Indiana University of Purdue University partnership creating IUPUI, and was a leading architect of the integration of Indianapolis public schools.

Nomination/application forms for the 2006-07 awards must be submitted no later than Monday, December 11, 2006. Forms are available online at http://www.iupui.edu/diversity/taylor.

For additional information, contact the IUPUI Affirmative Action Office at (317) 274-2306.
