Irwin Appointed Associate Dean
The Indiana University School of Library and Information Science is the only university in Indiana accredited by the American Library Association and was ranked seventh in the nation in the 2006 U.S. News & World Report "America's Best Graduate Schools". The Indianapolis program offers courses toward the Master of Library Science degree. A number of dual degree programs are also available including the newest collaboration with the School of Informatics to offer a joint degree in Health Informatics. The Friday Option, evening and weekend classes, and distance learning program are specifically designed to meet the needs of individuals throughout Indiana who have full or part time jobs who wish to return to graduate school. Graduates have accepted positions in school, public, academic, and special libraries, primarily in Indiana, after entering the program from a range of fields including business, journalism, education, law, medicine, and chemistry. Irwin has been on the faculty of the Indianapolis program since 2001. Previously, she was Director of the Center for Disability Information and Referral with the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community on the Bloomington campus. With Cary Buzzelli, chair of the IU School of Education’s Curriculum and Instruction Department in Bloomington, Irwin co-directs a doctoral training grant funded by the Institute for Museum and Library Services, a federal agency. She is currently the president of the Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies (ASCLA), a division of the American Library Association, and is active in the Indiana Library Federation. In 2005, she was honored with the ASCLA Service Award.
