Former WHO HIV/AIDS Director to Discuss Global Health Issues

 

Dr. Jim Young Kim

INDIANAPOLIS – The director who oversaw the World Health Organization’s successful effort to provide HIV/AIDS treatment for three million people worldwide by the end of 2005 will lecture on Oct. 27 at IUPUI.

Dr. Jim Young Kim will speak on “Bridging the Implementation Gap in Global Health” at 3:30 p.m., Oct. 27 in Room 101 of Lecture Hall, 325 University Blvd. Kim’s talk is the second annual Lecture on International Healthcare Philanthropy.

Kim has spent two decades working to improve health in developing countries. He recently completed three years at the WHO overseeing the HIV/AIDS Department which operated the “3x5” (3 million people by 2005) AIDS treatment initiative.

Kim is currently director of the Francois Xavier Bagnoud Center for Health and Human Rights at Harvard Medical School and chair of the school’s Department of Social Medicine. He is also a founding trustee and the former executive director of Partners in Health, a nonprofit organization that supports health programs for poor communities in Haiti, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Lesotho and the United states.

The lecture is open to the public and free of charge. It is co-sponsored by the Center on Philanthropy, part of the School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI; the Baker-Ort Chair in International Healthcare Philanthropy, which is housed in the Center of Philanthropy ; and Eli Lilly and Company.
