Inuit Artist and Master Printmaker Visit HerronINDIANAPOLIS – Master printmaker Germaine Arnaktauyok and silversmith Mathew Nuqingaq will produce prints, conduct a weeklong workshop with students and headline a one-day symposium hosted by The Inuit Art Society, a national organization dedicated to the promotion of the Arctic culture, at Herron School of Art and Design. This is the first time ever an Inuit artist has traveled to the United States and produced a print, from start to finish. Arnaktauyok will create two limited edition prints with help from Herron’s printmaking students. These limited edition prints, along with other Artic Art and materials, will be sold at an Art Market at Herron, at the Oct. 7 symposium. This event, and a weeklong workshop at Herron, is open to the public. October 7 Symposium, 1-5:30pm:
*The two prints, with editions of 50 each, will be previewed at a private reception at the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art the night before the symposium before being made available to the general public. Arctic prints are highly prized by collectors from all over the world and, historically, the editions sell out quickly. Weeklong Workshop at Herron: The public is invited to Herron to watch Germaine and the students create a print. There will be opportunities for interviews with the participants, including Germaine, along with filming them as they work. Please note, given the delicate nature of the print process, schedules may change.
Germaine is an internationally recognized artist, with work in many collections, including the United Nations. She has shown her prints, demonstrated and studied all over the world. She had a major retrospective of her work at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, was featured at the Canadian Guild of Crafts in Montreal and is preparing for a one-woman show in 2007 at the Inuit Gallery in Vancouver. In addition to her printmaking, Germaine is a skilled seamstress and has produced wall hangings, along with illustrating books. |
