IUPUI Police Nab Garage Theft Suspects

INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI police have struck back at thieves targeting vehicles parked in downtown garages, taking action that led to one arrest and an arrest warrant for a second suspect.

In one of the cases, an officer was making a security check of the Wilson Street Garage due to a number of thefts there. He noticed a male suspect walking through the garage acting suspicious. The suspect fled on foot as officers attempted to make contact with him and continued to resist after he was caught. A screwdriver that could be used to break into vehicles was located on the suspect and a baggie of marijuana was found where the suspect was finally detained. The suspect was arrested for Resisting Law Enforcement and Possession of Marijuana; transported to lockup.

IUPUI police encourage those parking in garages to follow these crime prevention tips:

  • Make sure you lock your vehicle every time you park it.
  • Do not leave valuables or money in the vehicle if at all possible.
  • If you must leave valuables place them out of site, in the trunk if possible.
  • If you have expensive audio or video equipment try to disguise it if it can’t be removed.
  • If you see activity at IUPUI that seems to be unusual or suspicious call 274-7911 as soon as possible with as much information about the people and the activity as possible.
