IU, IUPUI Featured at State Fair

INDIANAPOLIS – The 2006 Indiana State Fair will be Red Hot and “Red and Gold” this year.

An IUPUI pep rally is one of the featured events at “IU at the State Fair” day on August 10.

The pep rally is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. with IU President Adam Herbert, IUPUI Chancellor Charles R. Bantz, IUPUI cheerleaders and other representatives of the campus. The rally will take place at the Home and Family Arts Building Stage on Expo Hall St.

IU will celebrate its commitment to Indiana with 60-plus hands-on booths, RED HOT giveaways, pep rallies, and awe-inspiring performances during the day.

IUPUI Days will be held August 14 and August 16 on “IU Boulevard,” IU and IUPUI's consistent presence throughout the fair, which starts August 9 and ends August 21.

There are volunteer opportunities for IUPUI faculty and staff. IUPUI will be working in conjunction with IU in a large system wide presence during the Indiana State Fair. Volunteers will be working at the booths with merchandise, alumni, and general information as well as helping as floaters handing materials or giveaways out to the crowd. To volunteer, visit: http://www.iupui.edu/outreach/volunteer/state_fair.html.

A successful day will require significant participation of IU employees; from those assigned to staff booths for their schools or units, those who volunteer to be greeters for a couple hours, and those who have responsibilities spanning the entire day. Over 300 alumni, students, retirees, and employees are being sought as volunteers to assist the Office of the Vice President for University Relations on that day. In addition, each unit with a booth has the responsibility to set up its material, staff the booth for the 12 hour day (10 a.m. to 10 p.m.), and pack up its material at the end of the day.

According to Human Resources, staff employees not eligible for overtime (PAE status) who are assigned to work on that day as part of their job are to receive their salary for the day. Staff and Hourly employees who are eligible for overtime and who are assigned to work on that day are to be paid for the time worked and extra travel time that exceeds the time that it takes to travel to and from the normal work location.

According to Human Resources, all employees who volunteer on their own along with alumni, students, and retirees, to be part of the larger day to assist the Office of the Vice President for University Relations for a two to three hour block of time wherever they are assigned, such as a “runner” or “greeter” at the fair ground gates, shall do so on their own time. This should be made clear as part of the terms and meaning of “volunteers.”
