IU School of Nursing Assistant Dean at Bloomington Earns National RecognitionINDIANAPOLIS – The IU School of Nursing (IUSON) is pleased to announce that Joyce Splann Krothe, DNS, assistant dean, IUSON, Bloomington campus, has received national recognition for her community health achievements and contributions. Krothe was recently elected president-elect of the Association of Community Health Nursing Educators (ACHNE) (2006-2008). In addition, she received the Outstanding Contribution to Community Health/Public Health Practice Award from ACHNE at their annual meeting in Pasadena, CA, June 1, 2006. Krothe was honored for her work in establishing a nurse-managed clinic, the Brown County Health Support Clinic, which provides access to disease prevention and health promotion services to uninsured community residents. The clinic was established in 1996 with a grant from the Indiana State Department of Health, and since that time, she has secured funding to maintain clinic operations. The clinic also serves as a service-learning setting providing exemplary clinical experiences for Indiana University nursing students in rural health and nurse-managed health care. In Krothe’s estimation, her most important achievement so far in her career was the opening of this desperately needed clinic. The nurse-managed clinic has served as a model for the International Council of Nurses in Geneva, Switzerland; the World Health Organization's Eastern Mediterranean Region branch; and health students and professionals involved with Massey University in New Zealand. At the conference, Krothe was recognized for her sustained work to improve public health through her service commitments regionally, nationally and internationally. Her role as an educator and her research in relation to nurse-managed services and access to care were also acknowledged. Krothe has been teaching nursing since the early 1980s, has served as director of the Nursing Division on the Bloomington campus since the early 1990s, and while tirelessly mentoring her students, has published a number of articles on the most effective methods for teaching nursing and on implementing community development models. “Joyce’s election as president-elect of a national organization is a testament to her reputation as a national leader and a direct result of how well-respected and supported she is by her peers. Additionally, her being honored with the national award is a public way of formally acknowledging Joyce’s tremendous contributions to public health, especially through nurse-managed health care,” said Marion E. Broome, PhD, RN, FAAN, university dean and distinguished professor, IU School of Nursing. [The Association of Community Health Nursing Educators (ACHNE) provides a meeting ground for those committed to excellence in community and public health nursing education, research, and practice. ACHNE was established in 1978 and is run by elected volunteer leaders who guide the organization in providing networking through the quarterly newsletter and membership directory, and providing educational opportunities through publications and the annual Spring Institute.] To learn more about the IU School of Nursing, visit http://nursing.iupui.edu/. |
