Three IUPUI Women Attending 2006 Bryn Mawr Summer Institute

Professor Lisa Riolo, Chair, Department of Physical Therapy

Associate Professor Rachel Nardo, School of Music and Director, Tavel Center for Arts and Technology Research

Beth Barnette, Director, Office of Student Scholarships

INDIANAPOLIS – This June IUPUI will be represented again by three women at the 31st Annual Summer Institute for Women in Higher Education Administration held at Bryn Mawr College. Professor Lisa Riolo, chair, Department of Physical Therapy; Associate Professor Rachel Nardo, School of Music and director of the Tavel Center for Arts and Technology Research; and Beth Barnette, director, Office of Student Scholarships, have been accepted as participants.

This month-long residential training program is held on the campus of Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania. It offers women administrators and faculty intensive training in higher education administration and opportunities for professional development.

Commenting on her attendance at last year’s institute, Professor Jacqueline Blackwell, School of Education, stated: “The 2005 Bryn Mawr College Summer Institute for Women was a very intense residential experience that offered opportunities to listen, share, think, reflect, connect, network, interact, laugh, and wonder. Because of my participation in the Bryn Mawr Summer Institute for Women, I have developed a greater understanding of the university, school, and programs where I reside and had the opportunity to form a new network of colleagues.”

Another IUPUI participant from last year, Deb Grew, undergraduate advisor at the School of Nursing, reflected, “The Summer Institute at Bryn Mawr gave me the confidence to grow and change. The wealth of information was invaluable. “

Again this year several administrative units collaborated in providing funding to support the candidates. Support was provided by Chancellor Charles R. Bantz, Executive Vice Chancellor William M. Plater, Dean Mark S. Sothmann, Director G. David Peters, Associate Vice Chancellor Rebecca E. Porter, and the Office for Women and IUPUI Bryn Mawr Summer Institute alumnae.

The attendance of this year’s candidates continues a tradition beginning in 1988 of IUPUI representation at this national leadership development program. Previous attendees include: Patricia Biddinger, Karen Black, Jacqueline Blackwell, Catherine Buyarski, Barbara Cambridge, Lillian Charleston, Andrea Engler, Eugenia Fernandez, Mary Fisher, Janice Froehlich, Karen Gable, Deb Grew, Sharon Hamilton, Gwendolyn Johnson, Karen Johnson, Amy Jones, Florence Juillerat, Jonna Kane MacDougall, Joyce MacKinnon, Kim Nguyen, Jennifer Pease, Gail Plater, Mary Stanley, Regina Turner, Rebecca Van Voorhis, Amy Conrad Warner, Joanne Warner, Dorothy Webb, Kathryn Wilson, Sherree Wilson, and Marianne Wokeck.
