Herron Galleries To Exhibit Thompsons’ Private Contemporary Art CollectionINDIANAPOLIS - Visitors to the Herron Galleries at the Herron School of Art and Design, Indianapolis, will be treated to a sampling from the private contemporary art collection of John and Norma Thompson. Long-time friends of Herron and active patrons of the Indianapolis arts community, the Thompsons collect abstract art as well as figurative and historical pieces created by African-American artists. The collection includes the works of Romare Bearden, Henry Ossawa Tanner, Norman Lewis, Jacob Lawrence, Sam Gilliam, Richard Hunt, Elizabeth Catlett and more. The opening is free to the public and will take place on Friday, March 3, in the Herron Galleries at the Herron School of Art and Design on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), 735 West New York Street, Indianapolis. The opening runs from 5:00pm to 8:00 pm. Public parking is available in the IUPUI garage west of Herron. The exhibition will remain open through Sunday, April 2. Herron Gallery hours are 11:00 am to 5:00pm daily and 11:00am to 7:00pm on Thursdays. The Thompson Collection exhibition is sponsored in part by WFYI/TV 20 FM 90.1 with the support from the Indiana Arts Commission, Arts Council of Indianapolis and City of Indianapolis. About the ThompsonsJohn and Norma Thompson operate the Thompson Distribution Company, Indianapolis, and hold several board appointments. Mr. Thompson’s board memberships include: Indianapolis Museum of Art-Chairman; The Nature Conservancy, Indiana Chapter; the Indiana Museum of African-American History; Studio Museum of Harlem in New York City. Mrs. Thompson’s volunteer activities include work for Child Advocates and USA Track & Field. |
