Teaching for Civic Engagement Curriculum Grants AwardedINDIANAPOLIS - As part of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis' Commitment to Excellence, Teaching for Civic Engagement Curriculum Development Grants are awarded for faculty to create a new, or modify an existing course into a service-learning course. Faculty and the projects awarded $10,000 grants for 2006-2007 are: Eileen Udry and Katie Stanton, Department of Physical Education: "Service-learning that links children with disabilities, assist dogs, and IUPUI undergraduate students." This redesign project links courses in which students will apply concepts of motor learning working the dogs-in-training, and will also work in the Motor Activity Clinic or Ability Fitness Program with people with disabilities. Robert Osgood, Robert Helfenbein and Deborah Keller, School of Education, redesigned two courses: F200: Invitation to Teaching and H341: American Culture and Education. The redesign will include service learning and academic opportunities linked to the growing Hispanic community in the Indianapolis area. Philip Scarpino and Anita Ashendel, Department of History: "History for Teachers in Training: Integrating Community Engagement and Service Learning into the H105/H106 Experience." U.S. history survey courses will feature community engagement in the form of field trips to area museums and historical organizations, and the development of interactive learning modules. |
