Faculty Awards Nomination Deadline is November 18INDIANAPOLIS - The deadline for nominating faculty for four of IUPUI's most prestigious awards is just around the corner. Nominations for the Chancellor's Professors Award, Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching, Alvin S. Bynum Mentor Awards, and Glenn W. Irwin, Jr., M.D. Research Scholar Award are due Friday, November 18 by 5 p.m. in AO126. Complete information, including award criteria and nomination guidelines, nomination forms, and lists of previous recipients, is on the OPD web site: http://opd.iupui.edu/aod/awards.html. Chancellor's Professorships The Chancellor's Professor's title was created to recognize senior faculty who display a record of extensive accomplishment. A limited number of professors will be selected each year for this designation. Recipients will receive a $5,000 permanent base increase, over and above merit increases. Each recipient will retain the title throughout his/her appointment at IUPUI. Candidates should have been at IUPUI for at least ten years, must be in the ranks of "full" professor, and must have compiled a career-long record of high-level achievement in all areas of faculty work (teaching-research-service). Candidates must be nominated by others of full professor rank, preferably the dean. Nomination packets include a nomination letter, internal and external letters of support, and a full and current curriculum vitae.
Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching This honor, which carries a substantial monetary award, is given annually to faculty members who best exemplify the high standards of teaching expected at IUPUI, and who have earned respect and admiration from colleagues and students alike for the gift of instilling in students a love of learning and a respect for knowledge. It is the highest campus award in recognition of teaching excellence. Two awards may be presented annually, one for full-time faculty and one for part-time faculty. The full-time faculty members receive a permanent base salary increase of $3,000. The part-time faculty members receive a cash award of $2,000.
Alvin S. Bynum Mentor Awards The recognition, which includes a monetary award, is named in honor of the former Dean of the University Division, Alvin S. Bynum, who personally encouraged achievement among students by working with them individually and helping them discover their potential growth through learning. The Alvin S. Bynum awards are given each year to outstanding academic mentors - one to a faculty member (full or part time) and one to a professional staff member with TE, PA, or PB employee classifications - who have demonstrated long-standing and unusual commitment to the learning process. Nominees may include persons working with undergraduate, graduate, or professional students, although the selection committee has stated that a priority will be placed on undergraduate mentoring. Each recipient receives a cash award of $1,000. Criteria for selection of recipients will be on out-of-class mentoring activities, not in-class teaching. The awards are designed for those persons who are recognized by students and colleagues as having made truly extraordinary contributions.
Glenn W. Irwin, Jr., M.D. Research Scholar Award An award of $5,000 is set aside annually to recognize faculty making unique and important contributions to the institution and to their profession. The highest faculty research award given by the campus is named in honor of Glenn W. Irwin, Jr., who served with distinction as Professor of Medicine, Dean of the School of Medicine, Chancellor of IUPUI, and Vice President of Indiana University.
